Had Some Time This Afternoon & Came Up With Battery Tie Down

Hey Gang - I recently installed the Miata battery in my car (which was a few lbs lighter than stock) and was using the OEM battery tie down which mine was getting ratty, so I searched pages and pages of battery tie downs on eBay and found the Scion ('04-'10) might work. They key was to get a battery tie down that would not conflict with the left strut tower and the OEM tie down even has a curve to avoid the strut tower.

I paid $34 for the tie down (shipped) off eBay and it is made by OBX.

Once I got it, I trimmed it, shaved the sides of it and cut about an inch off the end, drilled some additional holes in it (eh..just to make it lighter and look more trick), cut down the mounting rods and then re-threaded them and then polished it and a few hours later here it is:

This is how it looks when you buy it:

After a few hours of these guys:

    You get this:

    and installed:

A little weight saving but much better looking than the old OEM battery mount.

hah.. I use a ratchet strap on mine. One word if yours don't seem to last long. Move it to passenger compartment. Miata batteries are kept in the trunk... they may have been designed to run in cooler locations.

Pray tell...why would I want to paint aluminum after I just spent an hour polishing it?

Yeah I figured that had more to do with it but my exide for a miata didn't seem to last long. Wasn't sure if it was a design issue.

I would clear coat it so it doesn't corrode, I'm sure its made of low grade aluminum.

Take note of the corrosion level under his hood - occasional hit of aluminum polish will be fine for it. Same treatment would last a week up here.

I lived in Montreal, Toronto, Kitchener \ Waterloo and Hamilton for 12+years so I know all about my cars disintegrating after the winter.

Very nice job. It looks good.

I was just wondering since you decided to use a Miata battery why not buy an AGM type rather than a conventional flooded electrolyte model? Apart from its main advantage of considerably longer life, it's also more resistant to the heat generated by the underhood environment, a factor involved in the Miata's battery placement in the trunk. Of course, it's also more expensive which may have been a deciding factor in your choice.

Thank-you! I did not buy the AGM battery mainly due to cost, really I would have loved to have a Odyssey PC680 or a Braille (big smile).
