    FYI about windshield wiper motors

I have been having some recent trouble with my wipers ever since my car got broken into. I don't know if it is because of something the a**hole might have done when busting up the dash of my car to steal my stereo, but it's possible that my troubles might just be coincidental.

Regardless, I stopped by the shop to inquire as to what I should do. The problem is that the wipers stop just after they reach the top of the stroke (on their way down) when I'm using the intermittent wiper setting. This is very annoying.

I looked into replacing the motor in case that might be the problem. Come to find out, Mazda discontinued carrying that part. Four other local distributors of such parts don't carry it. NAPA could get the part through one of their suppliers at about $221 a pop. So, the next time I go to the junkyard, I'm going to get me at least one as a back-up and stash it away in the garage. They can be rebuilt but I don't know how much that will cost.

Just thought I'd put out a "heads-up" of sorts in case any of you didn't know yet that this is one more part that is getting harder and harder to find since our cars aren't exactly spring chickens.

I think I found out what the actual problem might be and it might not be the wiper motor, but I'll let you guys know some other time.

Rockauto has BECK/ARNLEY Part # 1960205 closeout right now for $41.99

    also A-1 CARDONE Part # 431475 $83.79 w/ $10 core.

    might be worth a try?
    Also listed for the tracer.

I know in the Capri we have a relay/control module under the center dash that controls the intermittent timer, maybe you have something similar?

I'll definitely take a look at RockAuto.

I have a back-up steering wheel module (or whatever it's called). The only problem is that it has the intermittent wiper set-up that is not adjustable. It's one setting. I guess it's better than nothing. I'll keep scouring the yards around here for more donors, but I think I'll try swapping that on to see if it solves my wipers woes. I'll still work on picking up a back-up wiper from the yard if I can find a good donor with low miles. I figure that if it wasn't driven too many miles, then the previous owners couldn't have used the wipers very much.... at least, not as much as my car. after all, I only have 268,000 miles on my chassis!

Bro - I stopped by the Mazda dealership recently and there is literally nothing available for our cars..every single part I inquired on from distributors to windshield washer resevoirs are ALL discontinued. No money to be made off selling parts to only a small handfull of owners, so Mazda Management put the axe on making many parts for the BF. As an aside quite a bit of parts off the Mercury Tracer that are crossovers to the BF chassis are also discontinued.

Sucks? True dat.... Can't blame them. I didn't expect them to keep making spare parts for our cars, but I thought they would have an ample stash of parts stored away for longer. I just have to remember to collect parts at the yard when I come across good ones.

So your wiper motor still works through the switch? Just not all the time?

Mine doesnt work at all through the switch, but I hotwired the motor and it worked perfectly fine...weird?

I haven't noticed it, but I don't drive the car too much, especially in the rain.

It's probably the switch module that is mounted on the switch assembly. I've had them apart many times and some of the components are a bit fragile.

Another culprit of slow wipers is the arm assembly under the cowl. Over the years of use they begin to bind.

True. I removed the while assembly and inspected the ball / socket joints, and they seemed to still have sufficient lube. The motor housing, where the gears mesh, was a bit dry. I didn't have any white grease on hand so I left it alone.

I hope this isnt something mazda has done very recently, because in Ontario I can still seem to get BF parts. I just got new fender decals in January.

I'll have to check it out.

PS I've subscribed. My wipers are embarassingly slow, though they still work and I try not to drive in the rain so I never remember to look at them.
