I know this must have been asked and I'm willing to use the search function and am very capable of using it. All I need to know if the answer is yes or no. I will use the search to get the details but what's the use of searching and searching and then it turns out the answer is no and you guys who have been on this section have already gone through it. I'm active on the first generation board and don't recall the question being asked while I have been registered. Maybe I saw it and didn't need the answer at the time so it didn't stick in my mind. Hope you guys can help with a link or just the yes or no answer. By the way, it's an AUTOMATIC transmission. Most links are for manual transmissions since automatics are so complicated to work on but I'm not interested in repairing--just replacing. Thank You. .......... Jorge

why wouldn't an automatic transmission fit in a 2nd gen. The 2nd gens come in automatic also...
If you wanted to use a 1st gen motor. ..
Well I could see it being done, but just off the top of my head.
You would have to get your hands on a 1.8 wire harness and ecu for a 2nd gen.
Then you can try and either hard wire the wires to the BP harness on the engine or you can use the 1.5 engind side harness, but use the 1.8 injectors. Then hardwire the VICS to the ecu. You may have to modify a few other things also.
It can be done, but you may as well run a damn 5-speed. For gods sake. Not an automatic...

I think the issuer still remains with the speedo drive. If I was doing that and going automatic, I'd get an auto from a second gen.Ryan The middle child is always ignored

Wait a minute. Why would I need an ECU from the 2nd generation if I would be swapping both engine and tranny from the 1st gen to the 2nd gen? Same for the speedo. By speedo, are we talking about the speedometer? What is a speedo?

I think 2 screws hold them in ... I have to look on my spare tranny in the back .

The 2nd gen also doesn't use a cable to turn the spedo on the gauges. It is all electrical.Last edited by bruce95fmla; 02-12-2004, 01:23 PM.

Thank you protegeboy78 and Bruce. Thanks to your comments I ain't doin' nothin' with a 2nd gen with my 1st gen stuff. Ha! Ha! That thread actually made me laugh at how long and complicated it is. Ofcourse, mine doesn't look like it would be as bad but close enough. I just bought a 1991 Escort LX with a bad tranny to put my 94 Pro tranny in. After all the talk on these forums of how most items on the 91-96 Escorts and 90-94 Proteges are so interchangeable, I find a big difference. In my case, just the difference between GT and LX made the difference. It seems the bellhousing of the LX is Ford's oriented model and the Escort GT is the one that's the same as on the Protege. I would have to take the bellhousing off the Ford LX tranny and put it on the Pro's tranny and then put the tranny up on the Ford. That's the way it would fit. I'm not interested in additional work, more performance or spending more money than needed. Thanks anyway guys. This thread is done.Last edited by mannydingo; 02-13-2004, 09:20 AM.
