    breaking into a gtx

well i believe i locked my gtx for the first time yesterday. didnt think too much of it since i had the key with me. today i try to open it up and the key is a no-go. not really sure if the ignition key is different from the doors but now im stuck with the gtx blocking the driveway.

can anyone tell me the easiest way to get into the car without damaging anything?

    thanks.

I have a slim-jim from my MP days, but that won't help you any. (I gotta tell you that the BFs are too easy to get in to)

Just remove the weather stripping on the door and slide a coat hanger on to the rod for the interior door lock. Use a flashlight, if it's too dark. Yeah, you'll probably damage the stripping, but it's probably time to replace it anyways, right?

The other way would be to try sliding the sunroof back, which is how my car was broken-in to. I still don't get that one, but wtf.

Oh yeah, the only other way I can think of is to call AAA.

You don't have to remove the weatherstripping, it'll bend far enough. Better yet is to coathanger it from the top of the door. Just pull it out till the wire's inside and then lift the lock. All too easy and why I always put a hidden cutoff swich in my cars...

Between the weather stripping and the outside of the window near the lock. You'll be able to see the lock moving. Pull up. A coat hanger works.

thanks guys, coat hanger worked perfectly. did it without messing up the weather stripping.

is it normal for the door locks to be different than the ignition?

Nope. Sounds like a previous owner had to replace the ignition barrel.

correct. or the door locks. My ignition and drivers match.. but not the passenger side.

Mine don't match either. I just cut the two different lock patterns on onto each side of the key, then ground a notch on the key to know which side is which. One key works both locks.

Glad to know you got into the car. And, thanks for broadcasting everybody how easy it is to get into our cars!!! LOL I've used the coat hanger method too (I have to admit). I suggest a magnetic key box in the future. It's one step easier than the hanger. Maybe I'll start hiding a hanger on my car too.....

                    Good info!

I have used a very thick wire, mold it to a U shape and slide under the glass. I am not sure if in your car is the same as the Mazdas 1990's and Escort GTs on having the lock on the top of the door.

I am able to open Escorts and Mazdas using the U shape thick wire, same trick works on Mitsubishis.

Learned this from I used to work at a rental place. Many times I would get calls while been on the field and had to improvise to assist customers who got locked out.
