    pondering something

Hey, I'm new to the forums here, and like you fellas (and gals maybe :D ) i own a protege... i have a 92 protege LX (automatic btw, )

i bought it a couple months ago, and i got into a bit of an accident, but i fixed it and gave it a clean paint job. the interior is clean, and the engine seems to be in good condition, but the only problem is it has a bit of mileage on it (178k+)... thats the only thing that kinda irks me... but i wanna keep the car, and invest some money into it, make it go "zoom zoom".. lol

but my question is.... is it worth it?? its a nice car no doubt, but i still have the possibility of getting a new car in several years, so do i just drive it as it is, or put some money into to tune it up a bit? im having a hard time deciding, because unlike some others money is hard to come by for me :p so who better tell me what i should do then fellow protege enthusiasts? thanks in advance for your replies

btw, i have a picture of the car: http://www.zero-technologies.com/ima...?album=5&pos=1

    Welcome!
What do you want out of the car? Will it be just a daily driver for a few years regardless of how it looks and performs? Do you want it to handle good, be fast.....etc.
Mileage is pretty high but there are people with over 200k and their cars are still running fine, might burn a little oil but that's pretty normal. You can always do a motor swap. The same BP motor that you have in your LX can be found in the Escort GT as well and they are cheap and abundant in your local junkyards. If you want a bit more power, there's a j-spec GTX turbo motor which is rated at approximately 180hp and the GTR motor (very hard to find) at about 210hp. There's currently one for sale for a really good price if you check the classifieds part of this forum. If you have other specific questions, please ask and make sure you check out the Protege FAQ as it is very useful:

thanks for the FAQ.. thats what i needed! but yeah, i go to school so its gonna be a daily driver, and at first i didnt care about the car as long as it would get me from point A to point B without killing me first... heh

but now i want more, and like ive already asked, if its worth it i would like to tune it up and improve the performance, in all general areas (speed, handling, looks, etc.) then i would be more than willing to do so. but i mean, some cars arent just worth fixing up, ya know?

Yes, it's an old car but its overall very good and has an even better potential. Look around the forum for anything you might be interested in related to this car and I am sure that you'll end up liking it more than you do now. If you have specific questions, make sure you do a search before asking as many things have been covered before in great detail

He can always swap the tranny for a manual one But yeah, if you don't have money to invest in it, just do regular maintanance and little things here and there...

                  Hey.. Welcome!
I have a 94 Auto.. and to tell you the truth. the auto tranny in these cars are WEAK! so i wouldn't invest money on it to make it go "fast"(Turbo, Nitrous, etc.)it will not handle it for long. Unless you have the money to do a manual tranny swap don't trust those transmisions... I have replaced the tranny on my car twice, and now Im selling it because of that same problem.

by little what would be an average price range?
You could get a 2nd gen RX7 VAF and tune it for the best intake. Many have done that.

Thanks to protoss and the EGT guys for the link,

Oh and welcome to the board. I loved driving my 323, but didnt realize it had such potential until I stumbled upon the site.
