    BP...use miata cams?

I just traded some oem BP 94-97 Miata cams for some powdercoating work.

The Miata made 128 and 133 hp across this timeframe.

I understand they will work in my new BP...how much of an improvement should I see?

I've read that the Miata BP uses higher compression pistons than the Protege BP.
If this is true, then it wouldn't be exactly the same as the miata hp quotes, would it?

If I am not mistaken, I think that Jesse was saying that the intake cam is different but the exhaust cam is the same.

I know the miata makes more power mainly due to the ecu tuning.(if I am not mistaken).

You know I also forgot to tell you that you will need either a 1st gen BP/2nd gen BP/ or kia sephia BP downpipe..

I'd say I would compare the two sets but I'm too lazy to set up a test bench.

I did find this online...I don't know if it's true or not:
"In 1996 the peak HP rating of the Miata 1.8 motor was raised to 133 hp from 128. This comes primarily from the new for 1996 ODBII software having the ability to lean out the above 6000 rpm fuel curve. The slightly raised dome 9.0 pistons also continued."

I will be running an OBDII 97 BP ecu...I don't know if that helps. Since we're already at 9.1:1 compression ratio, would that mean I'm looking at 128 vs 133?

I figure why not...they were essentially free. Cost me $10 in materials/powder and an hour of my time.

I'll see what's up with the header/downpipe when the engine gets here(should be today/tomorrow)

With my 323, I want to send the cams out (BP) to mike323 and get them reground. I really want the intake cam near the wild side, but I am not sure about the exhaust side... I guess something else to research.

I can't do it with the protege, because I am going turbo.

Then you might want to reword the FAQ:
The 94-97 1.8L Miata uses an engine that is basically similar to the BP engine found in the 1990-1998 1.8L DOHC Protegé (the 1999-2000 1.8 DOHC Protegé engine is completely different, despite similar specs). The Miata engine has slightly hotter cams and a slightly less restrictive intake and exhaust manifolds than a Protegé, resulting in slightly higher stock horsepower (128 to 133 hp vs. 122 to 125 hp). All internal parts (such as cams and pistons) that will fit on a Miata will also work on a Protegé.

I wish he had been right...I was hoping to get output in the neighborhood of 140 hp at the crank. Like my old '92 SE-R. *sniff* I miss that car.

I'll keep an eye out...I'm sure a newer miata head will turn up at some point.

a 99 Miata BP cam profile is (intake) open 8 deg BTDC close 49 ABDC (exhaust) open 53 deg BBDC close 9 deg ATDC and runs 9.5 compression ,a 98 Protege BP (also 97 Miata BP) cam profile is (intake) open 5 deg BTDC close 48 deg ABDC (exhaust) open 56 deg BBDC close 14 ATDC with a 9.4 compession ratio and 9.0 for Miata . This info is from Mazda manuals part #9999-95-072F-99 and 9999-95-064F-99. Further 99 Miata BP was solid lifter MLA and 97 Miata was HLA if they are interchanged the valves are also different lenghts with the MLA head valves being longer. This dog has been beaten to death before.

As much as i hate to admit it, TheMAN is right and the FAQ is wrong. If you want the hotter intake cam you will need to get it from a 99 miata.
