    Quick 323 question

i just got enough money to start a project and was gonna get a 323 to boost and basically make fast since i have the 1.6l auto 3rd gen pro and im not gonna get speed out of that thing. Just wondering what i should look for like year/trim lvl and what is gonna be a good motor? i really dont have a clue when it comes to mazda's i really was a honda guy till i got the pro and realized that everyone here is a lot less of a dick then the honda guys so i decided to stick with the mazda line instead of buying an old civic.

Sorry for the reambling but any help is appreciated thank you

Eh, none of the 323s are really gonna have a motor that's worth working on (in the U.S., that is ). You'll have to switch the whole motor / drivetrain, if you want to go turbo. So you might as well just look for any 5-speed. If you want it to be light and have easy room for an intercooler, get one without A/C. Seeing as you're in FL that's probably a no-no.

well if ou want to stick with the BG body, you might have a easier time finding one. if you want to go boosted look into a gtx swap. i know there is one for sale on e-bay. that engine will easily mate to a protege(90-94) LX tranny
When you turn your car on... does it return the favor?

          1. get a 5 spd with no body damage or rust if you can.
          2. you have 2 options for power. DoHC v6 or I4
v6 has ranges from1.8L up to 2.5 (2.5 makes damn good N/A build up)
I4 comes stock turbo'd 180 or 210 hp. The 210 is a GTR, much more expensive and much harder to find. Most people, like limpgtx what they did is, buy a BPT (180 hp Turbo I4) and drop it in. Basic bolt in. Good power, good mods, loads of fun.

The draw back to the 323, is that the tranny (F-series) is weaker than the LX protege tranny (G-series). You can run arond on the 323 tranny with the BPT, but after enough burnouts, and hard drving it will detonate. If you end up going with the LX tranny, you will need a speedo cable, axels, and tranny from a LX.

Basically the best, by best I mean cheapest way to power, is BPT. v6 is appealing, but you will end up spinning your wheels from all the torque. Up to you. v6 takes alot more to swap in and is much more commonly found in the MX-3 guys.

Talk to people like limpgtx and others that have the BPT and then talk to others that have the v6. Ask them what they like about it and what they dont. Up to you in the end.

Happy to have another 1st genner.
The T3 BP MX-3 conversion has begun, and is taking forever & will kill me.

you could just get a gtx with the 1.6turbo (B6T)
not hard to find, but usually not cheap

there is also a GT-R with the 1.8turbo (BPT)
harder to find (but not impossible) and definately not cheap

GTX and GTR for sale here

the 1.8 DOHC (BP) from the Protege LX or Escort GT will also fit in the 90-94 body style 323 (BG)

the V6 from the MX3 (KL08) will also fit but needs more work

check out this site for 323 engine swap info

              (in the forums section)

Many of the Protege/323 parts are interchangable. A crapped out LX as a donor will give you all (Ithink) you need for a decent engine swap and an upgraded interior/options package

would it be easier to by a 90 lx and just swap into that?

well if you just get a 90-94 protege LX it allready has the DOHC 1.8 and is a good motor to boost. The same motor as the GTX, but I think there might be internal differences. If you do get a GTX motor there would be gain to be had if you use the N/A head on it, it flows better than the GTX head.

But still less work to be done if you get the pro LX if you swap the motor or not it will just be cheaper to start with one.

The 90-94 323 comes with either a SOHC 1.6 or a SOHC 1.8 neither of them are going to be good motors to start with.

sounds good ... like i said dont know much about mazda's i know a decent amount if it comes to hondas but after i getting the pro i found out how much better of a community it is .. honda guys are assholes and just flame a lot so i decided to keep with the mazda idea, and i love my protege well everyone has been very helpful but from what i can see ill probably boost a 1.8l lx thanks again
