    Interference engine?

Is the 1.8l BP an interference engine? I lost my timing belt the other day and the garage said they could fix it for about $750. Am I throwing good money away chasing a more serious problem? I've a 95 ES 5-speed.

    Thanks in advance

if you go to you a local autozone, they can look it up for you. i found that out when we were investigating a car that my friend was going to purchase, which turned out to be an interference engine. btw, when was the last time you changed the timing belt?

The 1.8BP is not an interference engine. $750 for just a timing belt replacement is way too expensive imo. If you have basic car knowledge, buy the timing belt (~$25) and do the job yourself. Not hard, just a bit time consuming.

That's good news. I thought I might have bought a new engine.

Well, I looked at the job on my trusty Haynes and saw that it was too involved for my level of experience and available time (I'm a Chief in the Navy and I'm on a ship)...that said, the shop also said I needed to change the idler and tension pulleys. According to him, they usually go out and take the belt with them. I'm sure the labor is most of the cost. It looks like a cast iron B**** to do. And I have never replaced the belt and have no idea if it was ever done. I bought the car with ~130K (142K now) and had it on my list of things to do. Well, it just went to the top of the list!

For Intruder, an interference engine is the type where the valves extend all the way past the head gasket into the cylinder, or at least far enough to where the piston would hit them if they didn't get out of the way. Most Honda engines are interference engines, that's why you change the timng belt RELIGIOUSLY on them every 60K (or is it 90K?) miles. You lose the timing belt....BOOM, new engine!

Thanks for the info Jeff. That's the first time I've heard of interference engines.
            Good luck fixing your car.

No mazda motors for the last 15 years are interference engines except the old F2s.

That question seems to be coming up quite a bit. Perhaps we should post it in a prominent location.
