deka lightweight batteries, cca's, and reviews

Hello folks, I'm researching weight reduction and found evo guys using deka batteries in replacement of standard batteries, saving up to 24.5lbs of weight. They are also around $62 shipped, which is the cheapest lightweight battery I've found.
My goal is to find a battery for the occasional test and tune night at my drag strip.
I own a heavily modded escort zx2, and weight savings is important to me. I understand my battery is a 35 series, approx. 550 CCA's.
    My questions:
What is the minimum cca requirement to fire and run an average bp protege, with alt, Drl's, rad fan, and engine? I try to optimize my drag race conditions, so radio, headlights, and heater stay off.
Has anyone had experience with Deka batteries?

I recommend Odyssey batteries, haven't heard of one single complaint about them personally. Not familiar with Deka...but damn that's a good price!

I currently have a 600cca battery in my Protege, and it will go down to 9V when trying to start in cold weather (handy voltage display ftw). This is with a battery relocation to the trunk running 2G wiring.

Although I'm aware of other lightweight batteries potentially suitable for our cars such as Braille and WestCo, I wasn't aware that Deka made lightweight automotive batteries. Which Deka batteries are you referring to? Are you looking for a battery to be used just for drag racing or do you want one for all purpose use? If the latter, stick with a BCI Group 35 type with the minimum CCAs as specified for your car - typically around 550. For a drag-only battery, a smaller, lightweight battery with a lower CCA rating is possible but how low is an empirical question. Check to see what other racers are successfully using in similar conditions. For competition use, an AGM battery is a good idea since it is more rugged and less subject to damage from vibration than a conventional flooded lead acid type.

Check out Odyssey batteries as Mazda_Powered suggested and also look at:

I use a motorcycle battery from Walmart in my Protege ( the 14BS model IIRC). I trickle charge it regularly since the car sits a lot. It has no problems cranking the car.

deka was always being used when i was doing car audio competitions, they where half the price of optimas and put out as much or more than alot of others. you also have to remember, theres really only like 6 actual battery factorys/buildhouses, so alot of them are the same inside.... that being said braile/ oddessey / shurken/ buddyclub/ and like 4-6 others are all the same, its what label you want and what you wanna pay....lol..... ive got one of the mini shuriken's local before winter, its been great aside from slightly slower starting at anything under 30 degrees, but it always starts right up...

There are at least four major automotive battery manufacturers in the USA. Exide (Exide, NorthStar and others), East Penn (Deka, Braille and others), Johnson Controls (Optima, DieHard, Durastat, Interstate, and others), and EnerSys (Odyssey and others).
