    Tell Me About 626's

Was wondering if I could get some info on 626's, I've been thinking about getting into one because my Kia (although it has a great motor and trans) has no aftermarket whatsoever and has the worst interior imaginable. I've been looking for Proteges but they are non existent, but for some reason there are a crap ton of 626's around here for very reasonable coin. I really need to get back into a Mazda, was leaning heavily towards a Miata again (or even a 240sx!) but having a kid a sedan is probably more practical, and if they're fun to drive I'm cool with it.

So basically I want to know, how do they compare to BG cars? Do they handle similar or better/worse? How is the aftermarket? Can I upgrade suspension parts reasonably cheap? How is the four cylinder vs. the six? ETC.

I'm going to be looking at one soon to get a feel for them, a 98 LX (is that a 4 or 6cyl?) with 105k for 2900. Anything in particular to look for? Problem areas?

Any info I can get will be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

The 98 626 are still a good car, but I rather prefer the look of the earlier style. I'm not sure exactly what is interchangeable either. I bet someone might have an idea though (Pat cough cough lol)

The LX model comes with the 2.0 4 cylinder FS engine though, they're pretty decent just don't beat the crap out of them and they'll last. The FS engine was also found in the BJ chassis Protege and they offer a fair amount of after market support as well which is nice.

Generally parts aren't too expensive for the 626 though, only a few $ more than BG parts.

Also they're quite similar to the BG chassis, asides the rear engine mount design and sway bar endlinks (droplink style).

98+ beware the auto trans mated to the 4 cyl. They are notorious for problems, your better off finding a V6 with automatic, which can still have problems but far fewer then the 4cyl trans. Flush the trans and add synthetic oil, plus a trans oil cooler and dont beat on it, the V6 tranny will serve you well.

I had a 98 ES-V6 with all the amenities and it was a nice car, but I needed the money.

That's interesting, does the V6 use a different auto trans? Do V6 models even come with a manual?

yes the V6 uses a different transmission, and yes you can find manual 626's but its rare. I have only ever seen 1 on craigslist and I think it was a 4 cyl

The 626 I'm going to look at here soon has a manual (4cyl), that's what caught my eye......I may be able to get a good deal since a 626 with a manual isn't very desirable to most people around here (suburban sprawl FL). If it shifts well and drives good I may just have to pick it up. But the V6+auto sounds tempting too and most are loaded and cheap. I may have to test drive both to see how they compare. A V6+manual would be ideal but I doubt that combo even exists.

              the LX could be either a 4 cyl, or a v6. my v6 626 is a LX.

anything aftermarket made for the mx6/probe mechanical wise fits the 626 as its the same car in a different shell. so there is tons and tons of engine and suspension mods, and even bolt on bigger brake kits.

i HIGHLY recommend finding a v6 mtx if your looking at buying one. anything else, and you will end up regretting it.

my daily driver/ winter beater is a 97 626 with the KL v6 and a mtx trans. it really is a great cat. and it makes a great replacement when i have the mazda6 put away for the winter.
