    kia rio

lately there have been alot of people talking about the early kia rio's and their parts swapping with b series motors. Someone mentioned they had successfully swapped an 02 transmission on another site and it was a g series, but I haven't seen anything here about a kia rio. Anybody know anything about it?

i believe the rio you are looking for would be the first gen?? it was available for 2 years it had a 1.6 dohc .. i think it was 2004 to 2006.. the later rio's had the hyundai beta motor..

I'm sure it's very possible to swap a g series into a Rio. The Rio is a direct descendant of the Kia Pride or Ford Festiva (Mazda 121). People swap b6ts and Bps into Festivas all the time with the g series tranny. You may want to search Kia "New pride" in other countries forums and on eBay. The Rio is named the "pride" in other countries. Good luck.

I believe he wants to take the G-series out of the RIO and put it in his aspire.

I'm almost positive that that tranny is an F series box.

I really dont even know how to tell, on the back there's a bolted on 5th gear cover, its just cast instead of whatever the g series 5th gear cover is. If you know any way I could distinguish the transmissions apart please let me know. I've been talking to damkid who is like an OG master transmissioner, and he says he's got a bunch of spare g series parts, gears etc, laying around his garage and he's willing to take some measurements for me when I split the case so we can all get to the bottom of this controversy. For now all we can do is hope..and wait till this weekend when I break into it!

I did a clutch job in an 06 Spectra and the tranny looked very similar to that one, but I see that one does not have that crazy throwout bearing setup like the spectra one did. I also cant remember if the spectra was a cable clutch like that one though.

ive never seen a OEM cable operated G series. that along with the cover being aluminum instead of steel like every other G series ive seen. and the throw out bearing arm is quite different.

in all truth that trans looks ALOT more like the stock hyundai tiburon trans i have sitting out in my garage.

I have read that it is a G-series without an intermediate shaft, the axles supposedly fit a G-series. as for a cable G-series, the Capri XR2's had them, and the 323 GT's had them too.

I hope it is, those trannies are really common out here and that front tranny mount will fit a Festiva/ aspire better than the Capri mount.

This isn't a complete how to yet, I'm still working out some bugs, seeing as kia doesn't do manuals well, their online database is crap for transmission rebuilding info, I'm kinda doing this blind and it's the first transmission I've ever disassembled. I got this far in about 3 hours, labeling every nut and bolt as it comes off..

So, after alot of debate and headaches, I have an early 2002 Kia Rio transmission, I have it on my kitchen table, and I have it apart. Can someone help me determine wether it's a remake of an E, F, or G series transmission, and if there are ANY aftermarket LSD's that will bolt to the ring gear?

I'll post a how-to along with this so you know what's been done.

                            Tools Needed:
                            10, 12, 14mm sockets
                            1 1/4" socket
                            3/8" ratchet & extention
                            Electric impact wrench
                            Prybar -or- rubber mallet
flathead screwdriver (punch is nice too)
                            Hammer
                            Marker
                            Egg Crate for storing pieces

                            The transmission..

                            Step One:
Remove the 5th Gear Cover by removing the 8 10mm bolts..

                            Step Two:
Remove both 1 1/4" nuts holding the 5th gear gears in place, and drive the pin from the shaft.

                            Step Three:
Remove 4 bolts from the housing, 1-12mm bolt 3-14mm bolts. The 14mm bolts all have springs and detent balls behind them, remove those with a magnet, don't mix them up.
This pic is of the 12mm bolt, right below the clutch linkage bracket. The other 3 are on the opposite side clustered together.

                              Step Four:
Remove the 14 Cover bolts & remove cover. 11-12mm, 3-14mm

                              Step Five:
                              Remove Cover
