    I'm alive.. BRAKES!!!

    Hola.... @@

I'm around just been busy and decided I'd be much more of a lurker than a poster here. Buttttt wanted to say hello to everyone :0) And hope everyone is off enjoying mardi gras.

My car, my beautiful car.. Is going to find it's self a cliff to fly off of if I can not figure out what is wrong with it!! Grrrrrrr.....

I have.... replaced the struts, replaced the rotars, replaced the pads about 5 different times, thank goodness for life time warranty's, and turned the rotars and recently bought new calipers for my car. STILL it's making this awful annoying sound like something is rocking back and forth when I break. It's only when I break slowly. If I break hard no noise, but if I come to a slow stuff so to say going through my apartment complex it's there! and it's embarassing. I am not sure if you can hear it when you're outside but I can hear it from the inside. It's my passenger side tire and I'm going ape crazy trying to figure out What else it can be!!!

Please let someone have a suggestion!! Because now even if I wanted to sell my car.. which I don't, although I see a 99 has much more mods available.. anyway... I dont' want to do that.. I just want the noise to go away!!

    Thank you!
    Michelle

    hey there stranger
According to my Anger Management Counselor, after 26 weeks of anger management class, I should be an expert when it comes to Anger Management...tell that to the guy who threw a starburst at my car in rush hour traffic...haha

I think I have tried helping you with this before. I did suggest to check the sliders, which would make the car vibrate during braking, but since you got new calipers, that should have been eliminated. Have you tried replacing the brake lines, or flush the brake fluid???
I simply so not know of what else to suggest.

        1. Check the TSBs http://web2.airmail.net/theman/protegefaq/tsb/ ...there was something for front brake noise but I don't remember the details. Also there's TSB for the front sway bar rubbing on the suspension. That might be making the rubbing noise. If that doesn't help...

        2. Take the car to the dealership. Tell them you've been having a problem and have done x, y and z to fix the problem. Tell them you want them to take a look and you're willing to pay up to an hour's labor for the diagnostic.
This can be anywhere from $60-90 depending on the dealership hourly rates.
So they figure out the problem....saves you the hassle of replacing parts needlessly. Yeah...it is $60-90 but how much is hours of your time you've already wasted been worth? Once you KNOW what the problem is, then decide if you can fix it yourself.

          Thanks,
I'll check out the sway bar tomorrow and take it to mazda tomorrow as well. I figure what else can it be! I could always give it a few more days so it's a louder noise... starts out quiet and gets louder as time goes on. But if I put new pads on it's fine for a few days. Thats why I don't think it has anything to do with the sway bar. But I'll see what mazda has to say about it. It's their car so they have to have some sort of clue lol.

          Thanks
Ya guys know I appreciate the advice and help!

            Thanks,
No I haven't tried replacing the brake lines but I did flush the brake fluid. When i put the calipers on my brakes weren't working so I had to bleed them to make them work. Should I completely drain my fuild and refill or do you think the bleed was fine?
augh!!!! looking at some cougars online.. hmmm tick tock tick tock.. lol but it would probably be cheaper in the long run just to fix this problem. Shoot I have a new front suspension/brake system... At least once I find the route of this problem I know my car will be okay up there for a while lol.

maybe it's not your brakes, maybe it could be your passenger engine mount..
              maybe the passenger ball joint
maybe the passenger tie rod ..

yeah jack your front end up....and do a couple tests.
grab the will at 12:00 and 6:00 and try to "wobble" the wheel back and forth.
then grab the wheel at 9 and 3 and do the same thing.

if you have up down movement you need balljoints
if you have side side movement you need tierods.

Well I took it to another brake inspection today. The guy said he's heard the noise before and it's because my rotars are warped. That my back breaks are bad or are out of adjustment and it's causing my front breaks to do all the work. And that when I changed my calipers and brake pads I didn't change or turn my rotars he said it's going to keep doing the same thing. Which is why I get a few days of silence and then back to the same noise.
He said I need new back brakes, which another place told me my back brakes had some wear on them but are fine, and that I need to adjust my calipers in the back, and lubricate the caliper or sliders or something like that on the caliper.
So that's my next thing, see if my rotars are turnable, replace the back brakes, and oil everything up and I'll be set.. hopefully. While doing this I'll do the above tests and see what happens as far as the tie rod and ball points go.
I really hope it's this simple so I can start having hope for my car.... lol

                  THANK YOU

There is really not that much in the rear. Your adjuster is probable out of whack, but I do not see how that will affect the front brakes. I don't know. Have you tried replacing the hardware in the rear, ie springs? But then again, do not waste time and money on something that you do not if it is the root cause or not. Like Davens said, take it to a dealer for inspection. They should be able to figure it out.

So did you or did you not replace and/or resurface your rotors? Your first post says you replaced and resurfaced them but your more recent post says you didn't do either. I wouldn't bother resurfacing them since new ones are like $20. New ones will be thicker (more able to dissipate heat) and come with a warranty of some sort.

Is your car pulsing or surging when you come to a stop? If so, it's likely brake related. If it's just making a noise then it's likely suspension related (strut, tie rod end, ball joint, wheel bearing..) but could still be brake related.

I replaced the rotars, and turned them in the past, but not since I put new calipers on and brake pads just this past saturday. The brake person I went to recently said, that is why I'm still hearing the noise. When every I put new pads on the noise is silent for a few days. But each time it comes back and so I fix something else. Hoping each fix will fix the problem. But what I should of done is turned or replaced my rotars this last time.. But it's cheaper for me to turn them (7bucks a piece at the base hobby shop) compared to spending 40 on the set. But depends on if they're turnable too. But I noticed the other day and more so today when I am braking my steering wheel is shaking some so that's a good sign they are warped. So before I mess with the back, other than changing out the pads, I am going to turn the rotars, maybe even put new pads on again, well at least exchange the ones I have, but dont' think the week of wear since my new one's will matter any.
The back brakes are supposely causing my front to over work, which in turn are warping my rotars. So combine that with my bad calipers I could see that being the case... or at least to me.. but then again I'm not a mechanic... so we'll turn the rotars, adjust the back and replace the pads and go from there. Besides checkin the balljoint and so forth there isn't much else I can do. I also kinda believe it has nothing to do with the sway bar, tierod, balljoints etc because whenever I put new pads on the noise is gone for a good 3-4 days.. I think it's a combination of just replacing one thing instead of EVERYTHING at once.. if that makes sense..
oh wells guess I'll find out tomorrow when I do all of this and my damn oil change! grr... I feel like I've been living at the hobby shop!
                          thanks!

you should just do it right the 1st time and change the rotors instead of taking the shortcut and cutting them...
The cost of labour and stuff that you have to pay to have the rotors installed is well worth paying the 40 dollars and having the comfort and peace of mind of knowing you have a quality product.

You may be able to use the pads again, but that depends on your current driving habits and mileage on the pads. I know pads usually conform to the disc that they are on, but maybe it won't matter.

All I know is that sometimes shortcuts aren't worth it.
I have seen rotors cut to many times at the shop and I am very familiar with how much shaving comes off....

so take that in mind while you think of what you are going to do.
