If you were still in the market for a GTX...

... or if you actually are in the market for a GTX and you ran across this scenario:

You find a GTX... newly rebuilt motor and transmission, new starter, alternator, etc... factory spec rebuild outside of a little head porting. The only real upgrade is the turbo, it's a new mazdaspeed group-N VJ16 jobby.

Do you pick option A or B?

A: 100% stock air flow, OEM intercooler, OEM rubber IC piping (24yrs old and running!), OEM AFM box and filter... etc, all stock.

B: Custom fit Bell intercooler and associated aluminum piping, cone intake filter and associated aluminum piping... etc, quality brand new parts... not a hack job.

Obviously, option B would make the costs of the car more expensive... The stock airflow system won't cope well with the VJ16, even at stock boost levels. So it more or less comes down to; would you rather buy a car you can have fun with immediately built with quality parts or would you rather buy a car, save a little money on the initial purchase and build a system to your particular budget? Option A... or option B.

Option 2, You'll end up doing it eventually so why waste the money/time messing with the stock ****?

I went with option A on my setup for a couple reasons.
1, I'm not that confident in my ability to make a custom setup work.
2, OEM swap is easier and cheaper
3, I think that the parts are easier to turn over, at least for now. (I could be wrong about that too)
4, I just can't stomach having a ton o money in my project when there are so many other needs.
5, when does it stop really.
      Edit-
An OEM setup will last longer.

Modding a design intended for general market is an easy target, hence the swap in the first place.
Upgraded turbo? Sure, let it live. But only as long as the rest of the system can support it. Otherwise, stop now or get out your wallet.

Appreciate the replies thus far... just trying to determine what path I should take before putting my car up for sale. Do I sell you a fancy car or do I sell you a car that's more or less stock?

You could always provide both options and let the buyer decided what they want to pay for.

I believe the stock setup will run fine (albeit without any benefit) with the upgraded turbo. I would always buy the car running well with the stock setup over the car with incomplete mods/tune. It would also be less work (cost & time) for you, and you never get your money back on modifications.

So, option A all the way.

Not saying the stock setup isn't good but you have an upgraded turbo why not upgrade its breathing.

I don't own the option B parts yet... I'm just willing to buy and install them if the market deems them required.

In a perfect world, the stock airflow setup with the VJ16 would work fine... but I just don't see it happening. The VJ16's wastegate is pushing 12-14lbs and with summer coming up, the stock intercooler won't cut it. The new owner (assuming it actually sells) will need something else before any real fun is to be had.

On the other hand, I still have a perfectly capable VJ14... hmmmm, decisions.

Craig I am kinda in the same boat. I think the '88 323GT is going to go up for sale before the end of summer, after I paint it. Its got a full tilt rebuild (wiesco, paulter rods, p-n-p head, ARP everything etc etc).

I have a perfect (aka not cracked) manifold, fresh, stock VJ for it, B6T AND Mx6 intercoolers with piping. decisions are indeed tough. Since I also have a custom manifold with a TD04 DSM turbo, all the ducting, piping, FMIC etc set up for a sedan or hatch 323.

I feel your dilemma. I'm even toying with putting the original engine/trans back in the 323gt and making it 100% original/stock drivetrain wise.

Hard decisions since there is SO little information about what people WANT or are WILLING to pay..

Agreed Rob.. I think the assumption to go forward with on BF's is that people are willing to pay very little, only exception being those truly clean and very low (original) mile examples. I've accepted that I'm going to take a big hit between what I've put into it and what I'm going to get out of it... it was expected.

I'm just trying to figure out if I'll take a little less of a hit if I sell a turn-key trackday/autocross car versus a work needed trackday/autocross car... My potential market is probably a little smaller than yours, it's REALLY ugly and I have no intentions of putting any money into aesthetics. I only see racers and project car buyers showing interest, anyone looking to impress people on the street wouldn't even remotely consider my car... it's really THAT bad.

I'm not holding out much hope... I'll probably end up piecing it out and yet another rust free GTX shell will be crushed.

Yeah, makes sense, I stepped all over Turpro's and FE3-323's admin penises awhile back... Actually, I think it was when I last sold something to you, Hah! They won't even let me in the for sale section anymore because of that.
