    Shaking Idling....Fuel question

I have a 98 ES auto and whenever I come to a stop my engine idles loudly and shakes. I've read the boards here and can't find anything that relates directly to my car or the situation.
It happens whenever I come to a stop.
I'm going to check my engine mounts but even if it's an engine mount that is cracked it shouldn't be this type of idle.
Also just out of curiousity, what type of mileage should I be getting with a ES 98. I know I do a lot of city driving, and traffic is bad... I use to own a 2001 Saturn.. and I was easily getting 350-380 on a 10 or 12 gallon tank. This car I get like 250-280.. which seems so low.

    Toodles

Nope AC has been off.. I haven't used it much since Florida has been a bit chilly here.. still in the open window season... but when I go out today I'll turn the AC on and see if it still does it.
      Thanks

I have that shaking (rough idle) but my 4th cylinder is broken. It has lower compression and every other symptom showing that it is not in good health. But my CEL is ON (Check Engine Light), so if yours isn't then it might not be related to the electrical part of your engine (ie, cylinder misfiring due to bad wires, plugs, or distributor components). When was the last time you did a tune-up? (change spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor rotor, distributor cap). This might be causing the rough idle. That's all I know, and that's the easiest to fix. I'm sure there are other things that can cause rough idle. Good luck!

          Nasty Idle

Get yourself a can of fuel injector cleaner(1). Remove the air intake hose (the great big honking one that comes from the air cleaner). You'll see a butterfly valve -- clean in front of and behind the valve. Make sure everything is *really* clean. You may need an old toothbrush for the really stubborn bits.

The explanation is that dirt around the butterfly valve allows some leakage at idle, making the engine run lean. Dunno if that's true (heard it from a Mazda mechanic), but it works. It's become part of my maintenance procedure.

          Darren

          (1) Carb cleaner also works. Note that pour-in-the-tank "injector cleaners" will *NOT* work -- there're made for something else.

Thank you, what do you mean by not the pour in stuff for the fuel injector cleaner, if it's not the pour in type!?
I will do this, either today or tomorrow afternoon! Thanks a bunch

valvoline has a fuel system flush treatment for 30 bucks go there and have them run the treatment on your car....its kinda funny too cause when there done, your car will blow solid white smoke for a mile or so.
According to my Anger Management Counselor, after 26 weeks of anger management class, I should be an expert when it comes to Anger Management...tell that to the guy who threw a starburst at my car in rush hour traffic...haha

                    what

valvonine or jiffy lube or any oil change place should have the fuel treatment

it is a 60k mile factory recommended service.

Okay, lol I was like HUH! Don't recall seeing one of those in Florida or back home In Washington State. But who knows never paid much attention. I will call around and see who can give me a better price quote.
Then I'll get the rest of this taken care of. Saturday I have so much to do with this car.. but after wards it should be doing a lot better.
I've done my tune up on the car when I got it.. so I know it can't be the wires or anything or plugs unless one is bad..
                        Thanks a bunch!

uhhh,, forget about taking your car to those shops to supposedly clean injectors .... 1 that.

As for your gas mileage. well that I have to say is better than my 1.8 .. I have been steadily getting umm like 220 or maybe 230 to the tank. when the turbo goes on guess what. The mileage goes down.

for your idle. I have a few questions.

Do you have a Check engine light ? (CEL)

When was the last time you cleaned out the throttle body?

When was the last time you changed your spark plugs and wires?

Checking your front engine mount would be a good idea, but it wouldn't cause ruough idle. the motor would just move around a bit while you are starting to drive. You can check the engine mount by putting the car in drive steping on the brake (or you can have someone do this, while you stand off to the side) and have the ebrake up. Then you can rev the engine slowly, just enough to see how much the motor is moving.

Also what is the condition of your battery and altenator?

edit: oh yeah, do you know how to clean out the throttle body.. If not just let me know. I can hook something up for you...
