noise when rolling and driverside axle seal leak.

ok i still have the stock sohc awd transmission in my car, i swapped a dohc bp in it with a t3 turbo, ect, ect, i did this a few years ago and the trans has been holding up just fine untill now.

well last spring i noticed the axle seal on the driverside was leaking, i changed it twice with new ones from napa and no luck and even pulled a stock awd seal off a extra transmission i had, the awd and fwd seal is the same, except the stock awd mazda seal has a little metal cup on it, tried that still didnt fix the leak.
well i just ended up driving the car for another month and topped offed the trans every week and then parked it for the summer.

i also noticed a sound,a pretty loud one at that, like a bad wheel bearing sound coming from the front, it only makes the sound when rolling. In gear or neutral it still makes the sound and starts around 20mph.

well i pulled the car back out yesterday and put a new driverside axle in it that i had laying around, as a last ditch hope of it being a quick fix before the snow falls, well it still leaks and makes the sound. i did check the wheel bearings, i just shook the wheels at 9 and 3 and 12 and 6 and there was no movement so im assuming the bearing are good. im going to change them anyway and maybe get new rotors also as they are a few years old now.

also the car runs just fine no clunking, goes into every gear, the throwout bearing is a little noise but otherwise it just fine.

so with that being said, anyone have a idea of what this could be?
im thinking its something in the transmission, but i dont know for sure, i have never pulled apart a fwd or awd bg transmission, for a matter of fact i have never pulled apart any fwd transmission ever. any input would be appreciated.

wheel bearing doesnt have to be loose to make noise . i was going to say bad axle with the recurring leak but you tried another with a new seal again?

yes i put a new axle in today.
as for the seal i swapped it twice with new ones with no luck and also swapped it with a oem mazda one that i pulled from a extra awd transmission i had laying around, i figured cause the oem mazda one had a little extra cup on the seal that i thought might help. the used oem awd mazda one is still in the car.

also last spring i checked for any cracks around case where the seal is and there where none, and the fluid would leak from the inside of the seal, aka the axle side.

ok i have put in a new driverside axle, and even put a speedi-sleeve on the axle end that goes in the tranz and a new axle/diff seal on the transmission,
        well the thing still leaks.
        anyone have any ideas?

It could be an output shaft bearing about to go. Any play at the inner cv?

i forgot to mention i put new wheel bearings in the front also, and that took the noise away, but the axle seal still leaks badly.

well no matter what i tried, new axle, wheel bearings, axle seal(oem mazda) or napa , and even a speedi-sleeve added to the axle, the think would still leak.
well i noticed when i put in a oem style axle seal in it was wearing on it, on the outer metal lip.
so im guess it is the bearing next to the driverside axle seal.
well i swapped in a different tranz i had from a parts car and that tranz is working just fine.
now i will be looking for a rebuild kit for that old awd tranz.

Bringin' this one back. I am suffering the same unstoppable leak with my usdm awd trans. I have tried 2 different seals. New axle c clips. reinstalled the axle numerous times. It only leaks when the car is moving. Just sitting no new fluid leaks. Anyone else wanna chime in years later?

noise when rolling and driverside axle seal leak.

I would say something similar to what was mentioned above. Possibly a warped case but that would likely leak all the time or a bad bearing in the transmission allowing the axle shaft to move around which would explain why it only leaks while driving.

You guys are quite certain that your leaks from the shadt output seals? Cuz my unstoppable shaft leak wasn't from an axle seal, it was from some damn fitting (difflock IIRC) right above the pax side shaft and I couldn't tell till I cleaned up all the gunky mess, shined up all purty, then drove a short distance and jacked the thing up and looked again.

In regards to my leak, definitely on the driver side. Clean as a whistle on the passenger side. I just installed everything fresh and new. Made sure to make it shine before I put it in. The axle stub has a decent amount of play in and out of the transmission, about an 1/8th inch. but it is definitely seated.
