I've so far been content to r and r rather than go into them. But now tbat they're getting so hard to find, I better start learnin.
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

Would a 4wd repair manual help?

(it's a big file, so it will take a while to load.)

I have rebuild a USDM 4wd transmission... I used to have a thread from when I rebuilt it.. I think it was over on mazda323performance.com though... That site is long gone though..

This is a picture of my USDM 4wd transmission with the case halfs apart... Yours will look similar...

This thread shows pictures of a USDM center diff all pulled apart.. Your center diff will be a little different since it has a viscous coupler in it..All though you should still be able to use this as reference to get an idea..

My how to on taking out a 2wd transmission and tearing it down...

Some info on setting bearing preload and how to set it up and measure for it... You need to do this during assembly..

No I don't have any copies kicking around.. I search on here, but I don't think I ever posted the info on this site...

There were some tricks and differences between the 2wd and 4wd transmissions... They weren't hard to figure out though...

I believe the JDM transmissions don't have the diff lock motor.. This makes things easier... There is a small trick to getting the diff lock motor off... On the USDM one you needed to remove the diff lock motor and actuating rod locking bolt before the diff could be pulled out of the case...

The input and counter shafts come out pretty much the same as the 2wd transmissions.. But the shift linkage is in a different spot.. If you look at the write up I posted up on the 2wd one you will see a slightly different way to pull out the shift rails/forks/input/counter shaft... I prefer to do it this way and find it easier to do...

Your center diff will probaby look a lot like the USDM one, only instead of side/spider gears, it'll be all sealed for the viscous coupler..

The transfer shaft you see in my last post comes out before the diff gets pulled out.. With the counter/input shafts pulled out you'll be able to wiggle this shaft out past the diff... It goes threw a seal and splines into the tranfercase that sends power to the rear diff.. Make sure you don't cut this seal.. Otherwise you'll have transmission oil and gear oil mixing... The transfer case and transmission are oiled separately and have their own fill/drain plugs... You need to pull the cover plate off it, before you can pull the case halfs apart...

The transfercase comes off really easy... Make sure you pull out the speed sensor first.. You don't have to pull the transfercase off to get the transmission apart, but it makes moving the transmission around a lot easier/lighter...
