    Wheel bearings?

I'm pretty sure both front wheel bearings just kicked the bucket at the same time which seems kind of odd to me.

On the driver side it sounds like a Styrofoam squeak when stoping next to cars goes away when I turn left louder to the right. No play in the wheel but when turning it its hard in when it get to a certain point as if the rotor is bent. I can only hear it when it can echo off something like trees, buildings, or cars

The passenger front sounds like I have a super swamper on it, rotated tires and it didn't help at all stays the same turning left and right. No play in the tire but it spins freely

There is no vibration, it does pull to the right a bit though

I know wheel bearing failures are common on these, I'm wondering how hard it is to do them and what should be replaced with them besides rotors.

Perfect time to do the Galant/Escort brake upgrade and lose the retarded captured rotor setup.

a thousand times yes on that upgrade. Worth every penny. Jack the car up and use a scewdriver or prybar as a sstethoscope and spin the wheels. If the bearings are bad it will be pretty obvious. Do a search on vr4 brake upgrade and wheelbearing replacement either here or the yaboogroups gtx list for details...

I looked on here for a how to, saw one but it wasn't for the bf. looks pretty simple, 3 bolts holding the lca on?Just need a few tools to do it along with access to a press

Vr4 upgrade is happening though, that was already in the plans but I'm still searching for a few details I need for that. Stock breaks suck

The squeaking randomly stopped today actually still need to jack it up and see if its hard to turn the tire. It didn't look like anything was catching when I had it apart

Sweet looks way easier than I thought, now just gota wait for decent weather, unless there is a place to get an entire hub with the bearing, I'm sure after 25 years it could/ should use replacement.

Question on the vr4 setup I haven't seen, is there anything special to be done to remove the stock rotor? Or just remove it and put everything back on. I haven't really seen how it sits in there to see if that empty spot will hurt anything or if I'm supposed to grind it down to where its flush with the hub

The rotor unbolts from the back of the hub face

There are two separate bearings that get pressed into the knuckle/onto the hub, you can get new hubs but they're $$$. I wouldn't replace them unless they are worn where the inner bearing sits on the hub. Watch the preload spacers!

the spacers are mission critical. they have to go in the aame way they came out.

This just answered about half of all the questions I had about it, thanks

I'm changing a bad rear pass. bearing, that was making noise last year, the rear brakes sounded horrible, sqeek, sqeek, slowing down to a stop, cause of the bad bearing, its got a number 7 spacer in it,i have number 8s and 12.Going to bench the number 12,but still install it regardless. I know for a fact it was too tight with the 7.(mixup happened quite a while ago,my fault,o well). "puny bf bearings......"Click image for larger version

Brah, get the bg awd knuckles and it will give you the brake upgrade and eliminate your bearing issues for life since you get the regular ol' sealed ball bearing setup like the the bgs. Plus you can use 4x100 wheels

yeah.....,no,that aint going to happen, have to change the struts for that. And I won't be able to use the bitchin' Mazda seven spokes that came with the heap. The brake upgrade will happen eventually, scored some discs and studs when we were in S.Carolina last summer. Now I can hear the rear left moaning a bit at speed! It'll be fine for a while, the pass. side was bad! Oh well. gotta deal with what I have.
