    mx3 seat removal

i went up to the junkyard today and found a set of sweet mx-3 seats...
the set is black and teal and in okay but needing cleaned condition.
    $75 for the set
i spent forever trying to undo the bolts, but they were not going to budge...
i don't really know what to do about it, because i can't leave them there forever, it's washington, it's most likely going to rain soon... i don't want them to get any worse...
i got the front bolt closest to the door off on each seat, but the other three remain.

is there some sort of miracle trick to budge these bolts, or is it just straight man-power and a 14mm socket?

use a 1/2" drive socket and ratchet instead of 3/8's drive and use a breaker bar as suggested .you may break the bolts but who cares the ones from your car can be reused . If you are putting the seats in a first gen the seat will be lower than the stock one by approx 1 1/2 "

when i removed my seats in my pro i just soaked tha bastards in penitrating oil/grease then came back in a few hours or overnight and sprayed them again

then once you spray it on tighten the bolt and little then lossen it 1/2way turn then tighten then start loosening it all the way

that way it warms up the bolt and makes it easier to come out

          its almost fool proof

meh, these bolts can be a bastard, and everyone i've swapped mx-3 seats with wanted to use breaker bars (and in one case it made the difference)! the best way i've found is virtually sitting in the seat, pushing the seat all the way back, using a deep socket 14mm socket to loosen the front bolts, then sliding the seat all the way forward and reclining the seat forward, jumping in the back and undoing those two bolts. with a standard 14mm 'short' socket if you will, it leaves too much opportunity for the bolt to round off and leave ya for the worse (the deeper socket leaves ya with better leverage/torque to get the sucker off). on top of that, a 6 to 12 inch ratchet extention also helps to avoid hurting your knuckles. also, another thing to bear in mind, your protege 'plastic caps' that cover the rear seat bolts can't be used on the mx-3 seat rails, so be sure to pick those puppies up too. besides that, your protege seats come out in the same matter. your best bet is to reset the teeth on the rail to the same position during installation into your protege, just incase they get knocked around during transport/uninstallation from the mx-3. from my best 'eye' gauging, there are 20 some odd teeth on both sides of the seat, so use the front 4 teeth for the inner rail and the front 4 for the outter rail.. as the bolts aren't offset from each other to any degree. the only minor detail that i've left out is the plug under the driver's side seat for the seat belt reminder. if you've disabled this in your protege, i wouldn't worry about it, but if you haven't it's just one other thing to make sure you don't run into problems. that about covers it entirely.

Get a breaker bar and a extension...

i didn't think to find a deeper socket.
i had enough leverage, but everytime i really tried to put weight into it, the socket would slip off...
i might try again on saturday, but they might be in worse condition (i doubt they'll be gone)... i would get a great deal at $75 for the set, but i think i'll just wait to find some in better condition... these had a little mold and rust.
now it's on to find a sunroof glasspiece and an escort spoiler...
those'll be fun to try to wrench free without breaking.

Did you use a 12 point or 6 point socket? The 12point is going to slip. If you've tried too many times with a 12 point the corners may be too rounded now.*shrug*

6 point 14mm socket... it didn't look like anybody had tried before... they were just really rusted...
there was an inch of water in the back...
by now, since it rains like crazy around here, i probably don't want them anymore...
i don't really want moldy seats, i don't think i could clean them enough to feel comfortable with them
