GB: Tie Rod "Flip Kit" Bushings

James (300zxrb26dett) pointed out a need for a tie rod 'flip kit' for guys that are running very low cars. Basically, this allows you to attach the tie rod from the bottom instead of the top to minimize bump steer.

You will need to drill out your knuckle to .75" as accurately as possible. The inserts will be .752" OD for a nice press fit. In addition, you could use some loctite retaining compound - I'd use either 638 or 640.

They will be made of mild steel and will rust, duh. Basically, it's a flanged bushing with a conical ID that matches oe knuckle and a straight OD to insert into the drilled out knuckle from underneath. There will also be the option to get an insert with a 12mm ID hole so that you can use a high-quality rod end.

I will most likely use 1144 steel. It's higher-strength than the usual 1018 low-carbon steel and it's much nicer to machine. Down side is that it's not considered weldable. I wouldn't weld the insert into the knuckle anyways. If you really wanted to secure it, I'd bronze braze it, which is better in cast iron anyways.

The inserts will be made to fit Ford/Mazda BG knuckles that are ~.75 thick. I will make the insert slightly shorter at .73" in case some knuckles out there are slightly thinner. The flange thickness will be .0625" and you will need to use a washer underneath the castle nut. That means the castle nut will be threaded ~1/8" higher up and will most likely require you to drill a new hole for the cotter pin (safety first).

They will cost $20 a set + shipping + paypal fees.

I don't need any money up front, but I do need to know how much material to order. So, post up if you are in.

    Thanks,
    --Ferdi

The tie rods on our cars mount to the top side of the knuckle. When you lower the car a lot the tie rod angles up instead to being straight with the knuckle. If you flip the tie rod to the underside of the knuckle you bring it back closer to straight in line.

Or am I misunderstanding you guys and its something else you don't get lol

Also I may be in for two sets. I need to measure my aspire knuckle thickness first.

I'd be in for one. Maybe two. I have to measure. My 626's tie rods are maxed out to get the alignment straight.

Sketch of what it will be:

In addition to what Ferdi said, there is also the option of using a rod end to allow the tie rod to be adjustable if you have special needs or want to adjust your tie rod for best performance potential. If you go this route, the bushing will have a 12mm ID to allow use of a m12x1.25 rod end that will thread onto the inner tie rod. *Important Note* If you go this route, make sure you use a high quality, high strength rod end. Do not use an economy rod end. A Chromoly rod end is ideal for this application

just curious, how do you suggest drilling a new hole in the tie rod end?
