    Very Kewl MPG

Getting some serious numbers with 85 octane at $1.69/gal. Filled up yesterday--13.86 US gallons. With 470.4 miles on the odo, I pulled 33.94 mpg. Most of the tank was over 60 mph, maybe 10% stop 'n' go.

Can't complain when you're putting your foot through the floor more than occasionally...

I'm at 5300 feet in Denver. You can drop the octane number for regular a couple of notches. Our fuels normally run 85-87-89 octane regardless of outlet. A 91 RON rating can be found at a few outlets in the summer, as well as racing fuel at selected suppliers.

That 85 octane gas may also contain up to 10% ethanol, depending on supplier. MTBE hasn't been added to Colorado motor fuels for more than 2 years.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

Yeah, 85 Octane has been a big deal lately with the automanufacturers, and the environmentalists. Aparently, it saves you gas, but the environmentalists are concerned with it using ethanol. A few years back, here in Maine, one gas station's tank sprung a leak into the ground, and MBTE was blamed for that. Since then, all gas stations in Maine that still sell gas with MBTE had to have thier tanks replaced.

            Environmentalists against ethanol?!

that doesn't make any sense.... ethanol is more natural and environment friendly than gasoline. isn't ethanol like wheat-based or something??

i had seen a whole show talking about saskatchewan's ethanol business.. but i can't remember anything over 72 hours.

Ethanol is corn-based. I don't see why the environmentalists would be against it either. Must be some nasty by-product I don't know about.
In the midwest US, ethanol is everywhere. Iowa especially. In Iowa, the 87 octane is usually 100% gas, but the 89 is 10% ethanol, and it's usually 5 cents or so cheaper.

Congrats on the high MPG, too. The best I've ever managed was 32.5, coming east across Nebraska (downhill & downwind the whole way!). Makes me miss my 40mpg Escort.

The American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) is leading the fight to ensure biofuels and farmers succeed in our clean energy future.

seems to be a good source for ethanol info..

I've read some claims that the ethanol accelerates the deterioration o-rings and other seals.

^^ isn't ethanol made from leftovers?
hence the corn is being planted and harvested anyways... just gives something else to do with the leftovers.. i know a good chunk is turned into animal feed.
Saskatchewan has a very high % of harvesting land with wheat and corn being at the top... so if it's already planted, then it IS more eco-friendly, as the tractors are already in use..
as well.. many machines that are used to seperate and mill the corn into whatever it needs to be are powered by hydro energy.. clean and efficient
in the US, most plants use coal, in canada, 15% of our power is fossil fuel, the rest is nuclear and hydro (with a dash of solar and wind)..
