How do you disassemble the side mirror?

Currently spraying my car and i want to know how to detach the piece thats have the mirror from the piece that bolts to the door. Is there a special way of taking it apart without damaging it. I made and attempt but it feels like I'm doing the wrong way because it feels as if might break it doing so.

Take the little plastic panel off of the mirror adjust. Remove bolt to remove handle. Remove cover surround, remove 3 fasters, mirror falls off. This is from memory from back a few years so I may have missed a step but I think that's all there is.

Jay you description sound like you're talking about removing the mirror the door, I want to take the mirror apart. Here is a pic of what I'm talking about. I want to part A (grey) from part B (black).

Oh hell I never bothered with that. Well I did once but the disassembly process I used I cannot recommend. Tree branch at 60 on the Taholah stage of the Doo Wop rally...
But I think once you take the whole mirror assy off the door, part b just falls away from part a.

you have to pull the glass off to get it apart IIRC and it's likely to break if you do

that don't come apart well at all. Just tape it off good before you respray. A and B stay together when removed from the door.

yeah that treebranch method doesn't leave you with the best-prepped surface for respray.

Masking was the original plan. I just wanted to know if there was easy way of taking it apart without damaging it to get a cleaner finish when painted.

Funny thing is that the mirror was damage from a low speed impact, but it's still functional. It only looks crooked because a tab or tabs broke off on the inside, looks like its the stiff tension of the spring that's keeping it together. It can be repositioned by hand and it will stay that way as long as it's not interfered with.

I will have to acquire a new side mirror as the permanent solution.
