    Mazda 3 is a Focus???

A friend of mine just told me that the Mazda 3 2.3l engine thats in the 3 and the 6 is the same engine thats in the Ford Focus PZEV and that all the performance parts are interchangeable...

I did a little research and came up with this site...

    Link

They had all kinds of different aprts that seemed interchangeable with the focus duratec 2.3l.

By the way I'm still n00B here so forgive me if this was previously posted. I did a search but didn't find anything on this topic.

It's a Mazda engine. It is the same one as the base model Mazda6, and the newer Focus, although it's only 145 HP in the Ford. An easy way to tell an '03 focus is the tinted headlight lenses. I also read that the 2.3 is actually lighter than the ford 2.0 liter engine.

145hp is the factory rating on the 2.0 thats in the mazda 3. I was really wondering is this a Ford engine in a Mazda or a Mazda engine in a Ford. I know Ford owns Mazda (well at least the majority of their stock) so I'm wondering which ones which cause if this is a ford motor we are screwed. If it's a Mazda engine then Ford may finally have a decent powertrain in one of their cars.

I just found it interesting and I don't know which car the engine came out in which car first.

I mean we can go back and forth on it all day but if anyone who may know and can back it up...
I just know if I go to a focus forum they'd same it's a ford engine and here we of course will clame it's a mazda engine. Just trying to get accurate info considering I'm in the process of signing papers for one...

But it is nice to see aftermarket already! They've only been out what a few months?

The PZEV is a modified Mazda MZR motor. Who really cares who makes it? If it's good, it's good.

Well the foci have a huge aftermarket. The 3 is definitely more refined and a better handler then most foci other then maybe the SVT. Just remember that the 2.0 nor the 2.3 have nothing to do wiht the zetec that most foci were.

I agree and hope this means the aftermarket will be much kinder to the new Mazda3. Face it, they weren't very helpful to the old Proteges(although it's getting better), especially the 2nd generation, as I had one of those too. The base 2.0 in the M3 is not the old Focus motor. Also I heard it is 148HP in 49 state trim, and 145 in Cal-EEE-fornia (Hey, my governor can beat up your governor, Ha Ha). I do worry that like Car & Driver said, that the new car doesn't have that "light on it's feet" feeling of the old Protege.

I mean either way it's cool. I was looking at the aftermarket parts end of the deal. There are quite a few aftermarket companies already and hella parts.

I know nothing about the zetech motor. I do know however that my boy with an svt focus had nothing but problems. Also I have another friend with an svt focus who blew his engine. The dealer said he didn't get his oil changed every 3k miles and thats why the motor blew.

My girls escort was a POS and honestly I don't like Ford. If Ford finally came out with a decent powertrain for their cars thats great!

But every experience I've encountered with any ford motor has been a bad one. This of course excludes trucks.

This has been my experience therefore is my presonal opinion.

the MZR engine should be a much mod-friendlier motor than the F-series engine on the 3rd gen Proteges

btw the pzev focus engine is a 2.3 MZR that puts out 148hp. Obviously they detuned the power for emission friendliness in that engine.

Focus is not Mazda 3. Yes, Ford ownes 33.3% of Mazda, and yes, new Focus, Mazda 3, and Volvo S40 do share the same platform, but neither car shares the same interior or exterior parts. And PZEV engine in Focus is a Ford engine. I do not think Mazda had anything to do with that.
