    idle vs restart

I have wondered this for a while now, and I don't know where to find the info (searches land me nowhere)

What is the pro's idle fuel consumption?
What is the pro's start-up fuel consumption?

I often wonder if I save on gas by idling for 5 minutes, or if it's better to just stop the car and restart.

I'm running 87octane, if that makes a difference.

You're not burning a ton of fuel at idle - but actual numbers are tough since fuel consumption is expressed in miles per gallon - of which you are getting ZERO when not moving .

I'd let it idle. Forget about the gas consumption, and focus on the fact that startup is about as harsh on a motor as is redlining it. So even if it cost you an extra dime on gas to idle, it's better than shutting down and restarting, IMO.
