    New DD

So I have been on this forum for quite some time had a few cars since I joined 93 Escort LX, 92 EGT 96 Escort LX, 98 ZX2 and I have my 94 EGT project I'm working on but my daily was my ZX2 and it tragically blew apart this past weekend and it is time to part ways. I wanted to get a car that was economical yet fun to drive so I can auto x it till I finish this project I got myself into and I need a 4 door since I have the 2 kids now so I picked up this gem. Its an 01 Protege ES 5 speed. Has some rear wheel well surface rust some dents and high mileage(180,000) but shifts really nice, runs good and I needed a car quick and the owner wasn't shady so it was an easy deal. So now I officially own a Protege. More pics to come after I clean off the snow tonight.

So drove the car for the first time last night. I gotta say I'm very impressed the car drives so well you would never think it has 181,000 miles. Just has 2 problems I have noticed. It has a belt squeak on start up no big deal probably needs an adjustment and it has this death rub noise when making right turns I'm going to look at that today.

I highly advise buying both the alt & PS/AC belts brand new & replacing them.
Also seriously recommended to remove the adjuster bolts & clean them up & grease them. you'll thank yourself down the road when you need to re-adjust tension or change the belt again.

I just did this task with my 03 P5 not too long ago

The alternator and belts were recently replaced but I don't think the owner knew how to properly set the tension. I am a little worried about the timing belt though. I found a nice shiny red ricer valve cover at the j/y so I might replace the cover and gasket and check out the belt while I am at it.

Then again I think I will paint that a different color. Red just doesn't fit.

It was dead at work today so I made an intake. That kept me busy for a bit. My co worker in the next bay over was like "really why?"

Work done in the past few weeks included a new T belt, front pads and rotors and of course a RF caliper the piston was frozen. Some new front sway bar links. There was a crazy sound in the LF I saw the axle boot was leaking a bit and the axle seal was also leaking. That turned into a new cv shaft axle seal and hub and bearing. The wheel bearing was replaced but they let it go to long and it damaged the hub. The hub fell out when I unbolted the axle. The noise turned out to be the cv shaft bouncing in and out of the tranny there was no c clip holding in the axle I'm lucky that didn't cause further damage. Today I buffed out the headlights cleaned all the windows and installed some springs I picked up off of craigs list recently I took the struts to use with my GC coil overs for autox this summer so I put the springs on the stock struts. And lets not forget about my Zombie family stickers that my sister got me for christmas.

Stock spring on the right new ones on the left.

Here is the struts and springs before I took them apart. Not a bad deal for $180. They came off a wrecked Mazdaspeed Protege.

Yea this car had a few issues. Thats what happens when people who shouldn't work on cars try to fix their own cars. Its all back together now and driving great. I'm pretty impressed with this thing been monitoring my gas mileage gets 30mpg average every tank so far I can deal with that. Its time for some more performance based mods now. I'm thinking long tube header high flow cat a short shifter and a slightly louder muffler. Trying to get my hands on the mazdaspeed protege sway bars off that wrecked car that would be a nice addition. Oh yea and I have to add one more thing to the list of parts I replaced the power window master switch too the right rear window was only working from the door switch.

Picked up these the other day. Bargain of the century $100 for a set of racing beat sway bars. Can't wait to put these on.

It was nice and warm out today by which I mean it was above freezing and the sun was out so I decided to get some work done to the car my first autox event of the year is 2 weeks away.

First I decided to finally clean the carpets and seats to hopefully get rid of the smell in the car. The previous owner was a slob and smoked in the car. I took out the center console and seats scrubbed it and vacuumed it. Smells a lot nicer now.

I cleaned out the trunk and decided to move the trunk liner so I could find a spot to install some eyelets so I can bungee up my floor jack and tub o stuff and when I pulled the left side out I found the previous owners porn stash. Score 1 for me.

I also finally finished painting my autox wheels. They are 15" so I can run spec miata take off hoosiers. They are a set of probe gt if anyone is wondering. AtomicEGT was nice enough to give them to me
