I replaced a 1986 base model instrument cluster with a 1988 higher end instrument cluster (analog, with tach). I've read in various posts that I should expect the fuel and temp gauge to respond differently and indeed they do. These gauges in the new cluster are smaller than in the base model cluster and it appears as if the voltage meant to drive the old gauges overdrives the new, smaller ones. Fuel is pegged to full until the tank is down to about 1/3, and temp runs too high. Has anyone done a readjustment to correct for this? Would it be as simple as putting a resistor in series on the appropriate input wire to the cluster? If so, any guess as to resistance value?
Thanks for any insight.
