    1.5L Engine Noise

My 98 LX with 67K on it has never been the quietest car, but lately it is very clackety (?) It rattles a lot on start-up until it seems the oil gets circulated (it was a cold winter -- it's running 10W30 Mobil 1). But it also makes a lot of noise when it's under a load, such as going up a hill. A dealer quoted 250-300 to do a valve adjustment; before I do that, can it be anything else?

Check your exhaust manifold/header for cracks...I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I'm on my third.

The symptoms are right on. Noisy startup until manifold heats up, expands and seals the crack somewhat. Or noisy at WOT and there's a large volume of exhaust flowing.
You can get replacement manifolds at a junkyard or Ebay. If you're buying on Ebay, there's a newer type of manifold that shores up where the OEM ones are prone to crack.

If it come down to any kind of headwork, PM me...I'm selling a brand spanking new never installed z5 head complete with valves/seals for $120 (I'll even throw in a set of used cams)

yea my 1.5 has been doing the same thing for a while. its still functions fine though. some other people on the boards have also said that their 1.5s are rough. i just think its something common among the 1.5s. but definitely check the manifold and such out.

Thanks. I feel much better that it's the manifold/header rather than the valves. There's a manifold on ebay for $54; I'll change that out in a few months. It would be great if someone made a SS or powdercoated one for the 1.5L, but that engine (other than running perfectly fine) is a black hole in the aftermarket...
