How to clean a K&N filter

OK, so I bought the filter about a year and a bit ago
I have nothing but good stuff to say about it.
however, i checked it out (the filter) a few days ago
    and it looks kinda dirty.
I know there is a cleaning kit for it, but it is like a freaking 30 bucks
    FOR A CLEANING KIT!

Does anybody else clean their filter WITHOUT getting the cleaning kit?

I know it is a little off topic and maybe stupid right now
    but i am a student
and it is the last of the semester, no work, and no saving, just trying to keep my car in good shape. Not being cheap or anything.

Thanks to all who reply in advance

I'd go ahead and get the cleaning kit. The oil included in the kit is what traps the majority of the dust that passes through the filter.

If you were closer, I would GIVE you mine. I bought it when I had one in an 88 GMC Jimmy, but sold it and so never used the cleaning kit.

but, knowing that they sell it know in pepboys and what not
I could go and get it from them rather from their website

Does simply replacing the stock filter with a K&N do that much good for a 3rd Gen? I had one in my old Eclipse and old GMC Jimmy. I couldn't tell a whole lot of difference. It is cheaper than a CAI. Either that or do the cheap DIY mod for the intake and have a K&N filter...hmmm....

the K&N drop-in gets you a meaner sound from the stock air box

performance gain? maybe, if you look really hard...
