I'm not that familiar with the 1st gens but the 2nd gens have more in common with the 3rd gen as far as the rear suspension goes.

when you say ... " i don't think that is going to work " .... is that just a random though or based on some valid info.

I know that the 1st gen 4WD rear end will bolt up to a non-4WD Protege .... the chassy is the same and the bolts align .... i have the 4WD rear end out on the floor ... i can take some measurements of the bolt pattern .... does someone have access to a rear end from a 2nd gen that could do the same.

Floor pans are not the problem .... i took a look at the 1st gen 4WD Protege ... and the reason why the tunnel is wider is to accomodate the exhaust and the driveshaft ( the driveshaft is on the passanger side of the widened tunnel, the driveshaft is in the middle )

if you want anything, you'll be tracking down the 2nd gen 4WD **** from japan anyway
Lets not forget that in 1998 people were saying that the KL motors will not work in BG chassis .... today we all know they can be dropped in without hacking anything ... just using the righ combination of parts.

Does anyone have the measurements for the 2nd gen rear end ?

I will take your word for it .... but i still want some measurements from the 1st gen and 2nd gen mounting spots.

Like i said ... i have the GTR RWD assembly ... i will take some measurements ( mounting points / trailing arm length )

Someone has got to have the 2nd gen rear end kicking around .... i am hopeing they are reading this thread

              :-)

I found a shop that builds custom driveshafts and a found a shop that does custom chassis work in my area .... i would not mind spending some money bolting up that stuff ... and it would be even good just to prove everyone that it can be done with little money.

Here is some other things i am considering for the 4WD in the 95 323:

              - Trany & Firewall ( spacing / mounting )
              - Fuel tank ( might need to reshape the tank or get fuel cell )
              - Rotors / pads / caliper replacement for the rear ( availability / compatability )

I am building this car for my mom ... i want her to be the coolest mom around and if there is a remote possibility of this car being a 4WD car i am going to try and do it ....

              - i priced out a custom aluminum driveshaft ( 200$ )
              - and mounting the rear assembly with little mods .... might be around couple of hundred bucks too ...

so i don't think it is a rediculous idea

The M3-R was mentioned because BMW had to build a crazier M3 to compete with a done stock Mazda RX-7 that was kicking ass in teh hands of an amature radio station DJ .... battleing against factory sponsored heards of BMWs and Prosches that used to dominate that race

crazy **** like what you want to do will make the car cost as much or more than the M3... thus it's easier to just get the M3 for the performance that's demanded
There is nothing crazy about that RX-7 ... it is a stock RX-7 with no power options and some CF parts.

There is no way that you are going to tell me that $$$/performance is better on a BMW than a RX-7. I doubt that any car can come close to it.

Don't surrender ... read more about RX-7 and rotary engines.
