    1990-1994 Hood FAQ's

This is a thread meant to serve as a resource for those looking to purchase an aftermarket hood, or who are curious as to what style hood they have, or what will fit their car.

    1990-1993 Protege

This is the flat style hood. The stock hood looks like this:

I replaced my hood with a G3 Autosports Carbon Fiber hood designed for a 1991-1996 Ford Escort GT. This hood can be found at www.ebay.com, just search for an Escort GT hood. This hood fits, and looks great, although there are problems with its fitment.

    1. The hood doesnt match the fenders perfectly:

The reason is that the fiberglass backing is to thick to sit flush. Cutting this fiberglass down to make it fit better is a possiblility, it just isnt enough of a piority for myself to spend money on it at the moment. Here is a picture of the problem area:

The underside looks relatively stock, just minus the fire blanket:

On the car, the hood looks amazing:

The 1994 Protege and 1990-1994 323 share this style of hood, the Slanty, Squat, Slanted, etc hood, however the 323 hood will not fit on the Protege and Vice Versa, due to the 323 being slightly narrower:

To make the CF hood work with this style, one would have to switch to the older headlights, or to the protege headlights, depending on which car you drive. There are more options for this hood, including the OEM JDM hood vents found on the 323 GTR, and a slanted headlight mod that makes the car look mean IMO.

    GTR vents:

    Slant Mod:

Anyone with additional info regarding hoods, contact me and it will be added. I hope that this was helpful, and if you have any questions after reading this, please feel free to pm/im me

It's been said that 323 hoods wont fit on a protege -- and vice versa -- a protege hood wont fit on a 323. They are a bit different. If you look at the top of a 323 hood, it has a crease that travels all the way across the hood. That is not present on a protege. I don't know exactly why the hoods wont interchange, but I think the 323 hood may be a bit more narrow.
I may experiment with this the next time Im at the junkyard, just to see for myself.

I was talking with Gro Harlem about this last night. The fenders on the 323 definately look different, and I think the windshield comes up at a different angle.

Good write-up. Hopefully it will clear some confusion. Though one of the pictures isn't working for me...

it's also been said before that the 323 grill that says "mazda" on the right side won't switch with the 94 protege grill that has the flames in the center like my car has. Reaffirm?

AFAIK the grill's --SHOULD-- interchange. This is the 1st I've heard that they wouldn't.
