    New Protege Driver

Hey all, I'm brand new here to these forums, and really new to the whole automotive world. My first car was an 86' Fiero 2M4, but I hit black ice New Year's Eve (wasn't drunk, it was 1:30pm) and spun out into oncomming traffic to get hit by a semi. Fortuneately no one was hurt, but the ass end of my car was laying in one big chunk in the middle of the road.

I've happily switched from the RWDs to my beautiful 1990 (89 it says on the door) Protege/323 SOHC. I love this car, hence my joining the forums ^_^. It seems in good condition, cept the exterior is pretty scratched up, and rust is forming in a Bfew spots underneath, AND the bumper is comprised mainly of Bondo hehe. Running wise it's great, although...

I've noticed some mornings after I start it up, the first bit of driving (reversing out of driveway, then beginning the forward drive) the engine sounds like it's going to stall... sorta... basically, all the bangs in rapid succesion to make the rev, are really spaced out... kinda like ... *bang*....*bang*....*bang* instead of *b-b-b-brrrroooom...* hehe well you get the idea...

It doesn't happen every morning, and I'm almost positive it's not the cold, since I live in Northern Canada, and I've driven it fine from the get go in -20degree Celsius temperature and it's still happening when it's around 5degrees celsius in the morning now.

Also, everything in the car, 'cept the speakers, is stock. So far, for engine work, I'm planning on installing a K&N High Flow Air FIlter, and attaching some new headers. The bumper will come in due time. Any other advice for my car? I already read the 11 cheap mods for the EGT; was just wondering if anyone had some other comments.

Peace out all, feels good to join the family ^_^

Welcome!!! youll find lots of people willing to help here and a comfortable atmosphere.

if you want lots of power, modding a sohc isnt very fruitful. i would duggest a dohc engine swap for that. however if your happy with what youve got then thats cool too!

yeah most of the "cheap mods for the GT" won't work on the SOHC. Swap to a DOHC It's a world of difference.

hmmm yeah I had a feeling that I would have to transplant a DOHC into my baby... I've been looking through the Buy and Sells, and checked out my local Import Cars Autowrecker, but I didn't find any protege's with a DOHC engine, let alone any engines left in them at all.

I'll check around some more, and also check out the rest of the autowreckers, since at the time I didn't know that the EGT had the same engine in it.

Just a question though, does the EGT have an SOHC and DOHC version? Or is it just a DOHC?

oh and also, would I have to get a 1990 Protege DOHC or could it be from the '90-'93. What would be the difference?

          peace

p.s. Thanks for the very warm welcome ^_^

p.p.s. I believe you you kid, you're by far the sexiest person I've ever seen! hahaha

the 91-96 Escort GT has the DOHC BP engine that you want.

the 92+ dohc has the forged crank :D

when glad to see more canadians in the group!
When you turn your car on... does it return the favor?

All the Escort "GT"s have the DOHC. The Escort "LX"s and Wagons have a Ford 1.9L SOHC

              90-94 Protege LX w/DOHC
92+ crank snout and flywheel are different
              94 has higher compression pistons

              91-96 EGT w/DOHC
all have the 92+ better crank snout
not sure if thay all share the same pistons. But i do believe so.

              91-96 Mercury Tracer LTS w/DOHC
              same as EGT above

Ah ok, so I can look into the old Mercurys also. That's good to know! Shouldn't be too hard to find an engine now hehe. Only tricky part remaining is to find one cheap lol.

thanks for all the advice guys
