A wheel cleaner will work wonders at removing brake dust and road grime from your wheels. Although, as I've said before, if you apply a wax/sealant to your wheels after cleaning them thoroughly, the subsequent cleanings will be FAR easier.
If you want to polish your wheels, you need to first find out whether your wheels are clearcoated. Some are, some are not. Your factory wheels most likely ARE.
On a clearcoat wheel, use a polish/cleaner to bring back the shine of the wheel.
On a non-clearcoat wheel, use a metal polish like Nevr-Dull or Mothers Mag/aluminum polish.
To test if the wheel is clearcoated...
Rub a bit of metal polish on the wheel with a clean cotton towel. If the polish leaves a black residue, the wheel is NOT clearcoated. If it does not leave a black residue, you need to use a polish made for use on your paint.5spd Maxima SE - SOLD

many great ideas here, but a few things to remember....when buying any type of wheel cleaner, make sure it is designed for your wheels. Like Mr Detailer said, before you do anything, you need to know if you have a clear coat. there are many materials and finishes used in making wheels, and likewise there are many different wheel cleaners. read the fine print on the back of the bottle!! I've worked at Autozone, and used to be very familiar with the cleaning products, and I've also worked at Belle Tire so I know that if you use the wrong cleaner you can void the warranty on your rims (if you have one)Please sponsor me for the American diabetes association Tour de Cure.

Yeah I forgot to mention that. For reference, I use P21S Wheel Cleaner for the specific reason that it is safe on all types of wheels. I detail other people's cars as well as my own, so I definitely don't want to accidentally use a wheel cleaner that is not safe to use on their particular wheels.
It's available at http://www.autogeek.net.
And it's plenty capable as well, provided you aren't so lazy that you can't do a little light scrubbing. Here's some pictures to illustrate it's capabilities:
