    2002 Protege ES Rear Brakes

    Hi folks!!

My wife has a 2002 ES 2.0L with 16k miles and needs rear bads already...not front, but rear.

Anyways, tried to replace the pads with ceramic ones this weekend and could not reset the piston on the rear calipers. It appears that these are just normal calipers and don't screw back into the housing...I can push the piston in a little bit but but the e-brake hook that rotates prevents the piston from going any further. I did pull the e-brake cable off the caliper.

If anyone has replaced the pads successfully, please let me know what the secret is. I am not keen on spending $250 at the dealer when I can spend a 10th of that and do the job myself.

Thanks for your time and repsonse.

    John

On the back of the caliper is an ajustment gear

    to get piston retracted:
    - turn it counterclockwise with an Allen wrench retract the piston (turn until it stops)

    after new pads are installed:
-turn the adjustment gear clockwise until the pads are in light contact with the disc plate and then back them of 1/3 of a turn
    - confirm that they do not drag by manually turning the wheel hub
