    Protege5 Value...

seeing as the mazda3 will replace our beloved 5's in the near future, do u think the value of the 5 will go up?
should i keep it and buy the rx-8, or trade it in for the 8?
i'm thinking if our cars are gonna be worth something, i'll just hold on to it a lil longer, no?

Keep the P5 and buy ME the RX-8

I really doubt the P5 will go up in value. If it does I would imagine it wouldnt be much. Plus it could also go down. Since you live in Hawaii you can drive the 8 safely all year round so I would just go with it. It sounds like you have the money to own both so I would try selling the P5 privately after you got the 8. That way you will get a little more money for it.

I thought about trading in my car for something else too but came to the decision that I'm going to keep my P5 for AT LEAST five more years and I won't be happy until it has AT LEAST 250whp too. Then maybe I'll sell it and get an Infiniti G35 coupe.

Look at how many payments you have made versus starting it all over and decide if it is worth getting rid of. Hell, I tried ditching mine for a cheap ass ride so that I would have more money to go out with, but I owe too much equity in it no thanks to the 72 month financing I did. I now have a little less than 4 years to go, but am wanting to go back to school and invest in different things. I guess it is how you want to prioritize the thing. As for it being a collector's item, probably not. Not to break P5 owners' hearts about this, but cars depreciate and it's not like it is a GMC Typhoon or Syclone type of car. My ES is the first new car I have ever owned and purchased new. I plan on keeping it for a VERY long time. Also, you can do performance upgrades and if you had to take out personal loans for it, they would be less than a car payment, hence you paying it off sooner, so you can have more horses under the hood. Just my opinion, it's your money. Cars make lousy investments as they drop $1-2K just driving it off the lot.

Usually when a new model comes out, the value of the old one drops like a stone, unless the replacement really sucks. That happened to a friend of mine once. He bought a new Corolla, and six months later they came out with a new model. The value of his car dropped about a grand, just becasue it was the old style.
I'm with MisterT on this one. I'm keeping mine until the wheels fall off.

The value of the Protege will go up?

Excuse me while I laugh histerically.

I dunno but according to the Kelly Blue Book one can get a 2002 P5 with 25k miles on it for around 13k.

It gets even worse when you try to trade it in. You'll be welcomed to the Protege $10k trade-in club.

The Protege's resale value was never one of its strong points.

Sorry to burst your bubble. I'd keep the Protege5 just because you've already spent a lot of money on it and you'll only lose even more money if you trade it in.

As already suggested, see what you can get from a private party. Maybe they'll even take over payments for you.

Whoever considers cars an "investment" should be slapped across the face. Cars are nothing but a trashcan for money. Funny thing is, we keep throwing money in it.
I have seen the light and it says RWD.

Going price on a NEW 2003 P5 (base model) around here is $12,800! (plus incentives)
                  I'd say the re-sale is almost non-existant.
The best way to "get some money out of it"
would be to leave the keys in the ignition and see what the insurance company will give you!
Or you could just enjoy the ride...

I don't think our cars are going to be worth very much with the way the used car market has been lately. The MP3 and Mazdaspeed owners might make it out okay, but the sedan and P5 owners, we are just screwed because everyone has one.

I want an RX-8 too! Wife says wait a few more months.

My bro was going to trade in his protege5 for a 8, but now he wants to put the hi boost kit on his wagon and have a nice little sleeper.

Good point. I am going to buy a H2 today! That is a dumpster for the money. You gotta have transportation to get and maintain a job don't you? Why not do it in style? Who cares if it gets 2 miles to the gallon:p: Cars do suck as far as depreciation and are expensive hobbies when you are in to customizing or increasing performance. The only worse investment would be in Enron stock or Martha Stewart.

My insurance paid out $12k for my 2002.5 Protege ES, it had 45000 miles on it with only a year of ownership. They lowered the price about $80 for "excessive wear on tires"

They took my deck, my H&Rs and my Injen. Oh and also my brand new "excessively worn" Kumho 712s

I think I got a good amount of money for it.

Hey, I'm paying less per month and I'm in a Miata now. Miatas don't really suck. At all

I have seen the light and it says RWD.

That's awesome about the Miata. So what happened, you totalled your car? Or someone else totalled it.. Either way, they didn't give you a chance to go take stuff off of it? Most people I know would have taken their intake and H/U and stuff back. Did you not get the chance? It's BS that they gave you the excessively worn charge, but oh well.. That's what insurance is for.. To bend you over and give you a most unpleasant experience.

They locked up the car at their "inspection facility" and I haven't seen the car ever since.

I hit some gravel in a turn and drove off a cliff, flipped 3 times and hit a tree.
