Motor oil VS Gear Oil in the tranny

So my friend 2ways me yesterday and tells me that down at the local shop they were talking about how in Honda's they use motor oil and not Gear Oil . I immediately ask if they are nuts and would not be willing to use my protege as an experiment.

So they say that the dealer recomends this and that they called Jiffy Lube and they put Motor Oil in your car's tranny when they change your tranny fluid.

I know that in my FSM it states that you must use Gear Oil with a specified weight.

What do you guys think of this?
Would you use Motor Oil in your Tranny? (and have to change it ever 15,000 miles(what the dealer recomended(they said))

    Hmmmm...
I don't believe that any dealer would make such a recommendation and I don't trust Jiffy Lube to, either.
Might as well just put canola oil in it!

I think thats a total load of bullsh*t. Gear oil and Motor, not only they have different weight, they have different life too. And Jiffy Lube is always full of sh*t too. I used to work for them, and know what kind of sh*t they are trying to push. Its probably a myth of some sort that just happened to work on some car for a few days, and the rest was left to... uhmm... Jiffy Lube, I guess.

Honda calls for 10w30 motor oil in their manual trannies. Some GM manuals use auto transmission fluid. Mazda says gear oil. I think I'd stick with that, if I were you. The Honda specification of motor oil isn't some mysterious tuner's thing, intended to give an advantage; it's just Honda's spec. Gear oil would be bad for a Honda transmission, just as, I'm sure, motor oil would be bad for a Mazda one.

I have so many damn civic friends it's crazy...
I posted on miata.net and they are saying that some Honda's use it some use gear oil ...
I can hear that, but for gods sake I would never put that in my protege...
          or 323

I had the gear oil in the protege since 95 and never changed until this year when I did the motor swal and I didn't even have to change it really to be honest. As the oil was frigin clean ...

For the most part you can run what you want.. but changing it will drastically affect the lifespan.. not saying hondas are gonna get cut short there designed for that light of a oil.. I run synthetic ATX fluid in mine... Does this cut the life shorter.. yup.. am i worried about it.. nope..

I just did mine (http://www.wihandyman.com/forum/show...611#post125611) and I used gear oil. My Honda (CRX) uses 10W-30 though, that's what Honda says anyway... works for me!

it's all in how the tranny is engineered. Mazdas aren't supposed to use motor oil, so for god's sake, DONT! Hondas are engineered to use motor oil, so use that.
