    Megasquirt Ignition Advance Maps

post up your setup (compression ratio, turbo/NA, type of turbo, boost level, octane of fuel you run, exhaust setup, intercooler setup... anything that may be helpful) and a screen shot and/or *.vex file of your timing map.

just thought this would be good for comparison between "homemade" maps like mine, and perhaps some real dyno tuned maps. ive gotta solve some issues with my tuning laptop but i'll have mine up when i can.

alright, ive not noticed any audible deto (not that i really know what to listen for anyway...) but i also dont know much about reading plugs, and my plugs looked a little funky yesterday. maybe i'm too lean or too much advance? idk. i have 20* at 210kpa and it tapers up the lower the boost. so i am running like 22-24* at the 9ish psi i am running now.

Plugs are easy to read more or less. Unfortunately it won't tell you all about the whole tune, etc. For example if your leaning out at high rpms/boost levels it won't usually show up if you coast ie drive NORMAL more often and thus it covers it up in theory. Plus in a turbo motor if you hear knock then its already too late because of the insane pressures in the cylinders, etc. ANyyyyywhos here's what a BAD lean plug looks like. Mine from awhile ago. Obviously this was on a N/A motor so its not gonna kill the motor in a short amount of time!

PS: Too much advance wouldn't color the plugs like the above but more like have your plugs look like its missing pieces. Let me find my B6 plugs when i had all the knocking/overheating issues for a PERFECT example that i'd like to call "f*cked!"!

              EDIT: Here it is... enjoy!

did you pull some timing Jon? I haven't had a chance to post my map but by 12-13psi I am at ~17 degrees advance. Plugs and everything else looks normal.

heres a general idea of the map i'm dropping in tomorrow...

                    210 - ~17*
                    200- ~18*
                    190- ~20*
                    180- ~21*
                    160- ~22*
                    140- ~24*
                    120- ~25*
                    100- ~27*

and then about 31* max advance off boost.

We've put the MSPNP base map from the '90-'93 1.6 Miata online here:

This is a dyno tuned map, under 100 kPA - the top section is extrapolated. However, there's a bit of timing pulled as we were more concerned about protecting the engine than with maximum power.

what were the dyno results Matt? It looks like you are pulling a lot of timing.

I beileive it needs to. Running anywhere over 12deg advanced around 4000RPM and full boost detonates like crazy. You can't tune ignition on street, so please don't. You need to be on the dyno with an EGT gauge. Running on the highway with your EGT and doing a 3rd gear pull to redline is not an effective way of tuning ignition.

12 deg? the guy with the 400whp EGT was running 20* at full boost and 24* at full boost with alc incjection... dyno tuned on a tech-2 ecu or whatever its called

alcohol is the key there. If you run enough alcohol, you can have as much advanced as a N/A car. I am going to the dyno on August 11 to tune 5 RX-7s. I am hoping I have enough time to tune my car at the end of the day. So we will see. I have attached my ignition map which I have run up to 18PSI with.

                              Cheers,
