Grassroots Motorsports $2005 Challange Protege/323? We need YOU!

    Hey guys,

Got a couple friends together, and we're going to build a car for the $2005 Grassroots Motorsports Challange. We're still playing around with ideas for different cars, but one of the ones that I'm trying to push is obviously, the BG Protege, or preferably a swapped 323 for the weight advantage. UPDATE: We are going to purchase Wil's '91 323 SE! Project is a GO!

For those who don't know, the www.grassrootsmotorsports.com $2005 Challange is a challange of a car built for under 2005 bucks in a drag race, autocross, and show event. Being that this is the first year that our team will make it, we're not trying to go for the overall win, but we want a fairly competitive car.

Plans go something along these lines...

-need to get a car first! needs to be running unless we can VERY SOON get our hands on a running engine for a swap. Bolt in swaps are about the only thing we want to deal with, because of the time constraint. We do have one good fab guy for something crazy if we get the deal of a lifetime.
-if budget allows, swap an engine into it
-plumb a nitrous kit onto it
-get ahold of some WIDE 13" wheels (at least 7" wide)
-R compounds for autocross, used slicks for drag
    -big rear swaybar
-hopefully good aftermarket struts, modified to gain more camber
    -cheapie coilovers, custom spring rates
-if we get super-ambitious, and because this car will only be needed to run for one major event, we're going to engineer our own version of the "phatomgrip" lsd.

Now, the question is this... Given that a lot of stuff like this isn't always available for sale right now, and this car has to be built fairly soon, (competition in april, needs to be done well before that to test and tune)

we're looking for a possibility of "renting" pieces that you guys aren't using, or don't need for a little while. Have a rear sway bar you haven't used yet? Had some coilovers that you took off the car for winter? have a stained MX-3 seat that you don't need? whatever!!

    Priorities go something like this:
    1. go-fast and handling items
    2. go-fast and handling items
    3.
    4.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    23497. everything else

    you get the picture.

Basically the idea would be to let us buy/borrow/rent the parts from you for a fair price (we can only spend $2005 on the entire build, including labor, so don't expect for us to pay top dollar). We can then ship the stuff back to you after the competition if it was a rental type deal.

the car *WILL* see at least one printed photograph in the GRM magazine, and will carry at least one LARGE ClubProtege decal on it.

I'm also thinking that anyone who actually contributes parts, or maybe even a few bucks will recieve his/her name in vinyl on car somewhere.

Hopefully we'll get some good feedback from this.

Post here with how you may be able to help. OT posts, and by OT, I mean anything I personally don't like, will be deleted.

When is the deadline for this? If you're interested, I might be able to let you borrow a Gude header that I am currently not using...

Competition is in early April, we'd probably want to have the car completed by mid January if possible, but obvious we can add little things as we go. With a competition like this, and trying to find the best deals, it's not something you can do in a weekend.

also, for the most part, internal pieces aren't really useable to us. We don't have the time or money to do a real rebuild on the engine, so unfortunately, something like some High Comp. pistons aren't of real use to us. However, a set of cams would be nice... or maybe at least another exhaust cam.

I've been a fan of the Grassroots Challenge since the original $1500 Challenge!
I don't have a lot of parts/money but whatever I can do will be done!

Yeah, It's definately a really fun time for all. I've worked for GRM the last 2 years, the first year just doing menial stuff at the event, and last year being one of the "hired gun" drivers, which was certainly a blast. I figure this year I'll actually make the plunge into building something.

                        Use my 91 323 SE!!

Remember what we talked about. I'll lend you my zx2/ground-control setup w/strutmounts if you ship them to me when your done w/them.

I'll also install a BP into the car before you pick it up free of labor BUT i'm not spending 1 cent on any parts you want for the motor (thermostat, gaskets, belts, etc.)

                        Pics of the car here:

Well, looking at the budget, Wil's 323 is a bit steep at 600 bucks...

                              here's how it runs down...

                              Car + Sales Tax $650
                              Transport cost $100
                              Used struts/GC $250
                              Nitrous Kit $200
                              Wheels $260 (13 x 7 diamond racing)
                              Tires $400 (Used R compound + 2 drag slicks)
                              Paint & Bondo $80

                              Total $1940

That's pushing awfully close to our 2005 dollar budget... like if ANYTHING breaks, it goes over budget.

Labor is free, and our fab guy can also do body and paint work, which is nice, but materials still cost us.

Come on Wil, give it to us for $400!
