Replacing valve cover gasket; where to place silicone sealant?

I'm going to try and replace my valve cover gasket this weekend as I've been getting some blow by on my distributor for some time. The Haynes manual says to place silicon sealant in the groove on the valve cover and pressing the gasket in to the groove. For SOCH motors it simply states to reinstall the cover, but for DOCH motors you need to apply sealant to the areas of the cylinder head as well was the valve cover. Even though Haynes makes no mention of it, would it be a good precaution to apply sealant to a SOHC cylinder head?

Anybody have any silicone sealant recommendations?

I'm not familiar with the SOHC valve cover but the reason you need the sealant for the DOHC is because one part on the valve cover that arcs onto a flat surface does not seal as well. If its just a flat surface you should be fine. I just did the valve cover on my DOHC only useing the sealant in the corners and so far nothing is leaking.

i just replaced mine on my SOHC and i just put a tiny bit all the way around on the valve cover. I don't think it's needed.
