    Direct from Mazda GTR Specs

    Intake Manifold

With the "Big Turbo", it has become critical that boosted air is distributed to the individual cylinders in equal volume and pressure. Likewise, the energy of exhaust gas must be fully exploited to quickly "spin-up" the big turbine in order to obtain high power and minimum turbo lag.

The Mazda engine design team has perfected a unique manifold system, combining the air volume and pressure equalizing intake and exhaust extractor manifolds.

It was Mazda's finding that with more a more commonly used equal-length intake manifold, the tract nearest to the air entry received the least volume/pressure, and the farthest tract the most. By trial, measurement and testing, the engine team perfected a cast aluminum manifold that has intricately curved and sized "walls" between the individual tracts leading to the intake ports to equalize air volume and pressure. A bonus is that the manifold's swirl generating effect contribute to efficient combustion. The equalizer intake manifolds have shown its effectiveness in improving torque from idling to the Group-A 300-bhp-plus output level and all the way up to maximum revs.

Since I race a highly modified N/A RX-7, I thought I might chime in on this a little bit.

The location of the torque curve in an engine can be changed by changing the length of the intake manifold runners. For example on the our race car, with the TWM throttle body and the 4" intake runners, we have 255rwhp at around 9500rpm. However if the runners are changed to 5" which we did for an 8hour endurance race, that HP number dropped to around 8300rpm. The longer the runners are, the more low end torque is produced since the air has more length to pick up velocity. It's great on a turbo car because this helps spool the turbo up way quicker.

Now the best design is to copy something like the Mazda 787B (the 1991 Lemans winner). I am currently working on that design for my race car. It is variable length intake which basically varies 6" in length and gives you max torque from 4500rpm to well over 10000rpm. It is of course way easier to build such thing for a rotary engine than a piston engine.

      That's my 2 cents

I noticed that my VJ-23 spools way quicker when I upgraded from the GTX intake to GTR intake. If you have the means of changing to the GTR intake, specially if you have a bigger turbo, I highly recommend it.

im to lazy to read the whole post so ill just say this

ths big design differance is supost to help stop the detenation problenm in cylinder one, this can also be addressed by the fuel rail mod i saw on a escort at CS two years ago by feeding the fuel rail from both sides and putting the regulater inbetween cylinders 2-3

I finally got a GTR intake manifold. I cant wait to see the difference in performance! But it will get sand blasted and mabe powder coated before I install it.

How does it feel compared to the BP-26 manifold?

To be completely honest I didnt feel that much of a improvement. But I did notice the power difference on top end.

if you installa gtx or gtr manifold on a n/a motor with a stock ecu YES the engine light will come on.

you sure??? I run the na ecu on boost for years and no check engine light has ever come on.

did you leave the vics and fpr soleniods pluged in?

All my local buddies have turboed BP's and none of them have a check engine code and theres a few proto's and one mx3, And most of them are running a NA ecu with a afc controller.
I usually cut off the vics plugs cause they will never be used again then toss out the sensors.
Kinda wierd that other people get a check engine code and ive never had that code pop up ever, and ive had boosted BP's for over 5 years now.

i know for a fact it has poped a code for vics. there is even a code in the manual for vics soleniod maybe only the egts do it ..

,my protege is a 91 dx

with a bp engine and a g series trans swapped

also we used a b8 harness and addes the wires.

but we are using a 1995 escort GT ecu
