Sounds like a combination of not enough lube in the track, and needing to replace the window gear thingie(sorry). Try a silicone lube in the tracks. You'll need to do a search, to find the thread about the gear. I have it saved on my home computer, and am at work right now. I need to replace mine also, and in the thread I'm referencing, the poster said the part was like ~$15?

I was at the dealer this morning, trying to order the gear. They tell me that I have to buy the whole actuator, which is around $95. No thanks. Went home and pulled the door apart, and found out that the gear is actually on the window motor and not the actuator-whateve an actuator is in this case. The gear on mine is toast(see pic) and I'll be taking yet another trip to Pick-n-Pull on a Sunday to scrounge. Fakk.

          Update

Just back from the j/y, and installed the gear pictured below. The difference is obvious. The window no longer pops when it reaches the top/bottom of the travel. All is good now!. A little heads-up though; after you remove the window from the track and unbolt the track from the door, fish the upper end of the track out of the door first. If you try to fish the end with the motor out first, it won't work. Make sure you lube the pearls with white lithium grease before you put everything back together.
Oh yeah, don't bother trying to take the gear from a driver's side door. They're all trashed. Take the gear off the passenger side, it's not used as much. I scored this one and an extra from a Pro and an Escort.

the gears are cheap enough from a dealer. I paid 9.00 for one recently. They look to be made of a fiberglass composite.

is it possible to show us how you replaced this?

I believe that a 91 LX has 3 screws to remove, 2 of them are under round plastic caps on the door plastic area. The other one is in the door handle itself(someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm going offa memory). Pull off the black triangular trim piece behind the mirror, then grab the bottom of the door panel and pull, away from the door. You'll hear several pops, which are the white plastic clips that hold the panel in place. Work your way up pulling on the sides of the panel till the only thing touching the door is the top of the panel. Remove the panel from the top of the door and unplug the power window control module, then fish the door handle through the handle hole.
--Re-plug the power window control, and lower the window till you can get to the two 10mm screws that screw the window to the track. You're gonna have to cut the plastic to see the innards, btw. Remove the screws, holding the window pane of course-you don't want to break it. Pull the window up and out of the door, back side out first. Stash the window safely.
--Now you're gonna remove the track/motor assembly. There's two 10mm nuts up top, and three 10mm screws on the bottom of the track. Take all of them off, then follow the wiring from the motor to the plug in the door and unplug it. Look for a brownish rubber tube that goes from the motor to the top of the door, you'll see 2 white rings on it that clip through the inside wall of the door. Unclip them and push the tits through the door. It can get tricky at this point, if you don't follow these directions(I found out the hard way).
--Lower the track assembly to the bottom of the door with the top of the track facing the back of the door. You're gonna fish the top of the track through the hole in the door first, then the other end with the motor. At this point, you should have the assembly out of the door.
--Next, get an 8mm socket, preferably 1/4 inch drive(clearance issues w/ a 3/8's) and a ratchet. There's three 8mm screws that you take off the track assembly where the motor is, and then work the motor off the track.
--Take a pair of snap-ring pliers and remove the snap ring on the gear, and pull the old gear off the motor. Put the new gear on and reinstall the snap-ring. Take some white lithium grease and lube the **** outta the white pearls in the track and cycle the pearls thru the track till they move smoothly. Re-install the motor on the track assembly and reassemble everything in the reverse order that you took it apart.
