    Fixing the motor.

Hello, I bought a 1993 lx with 195,000 miles on it. I recently installed a 1995 escort GT manifold with 4 wire o2 sensor. Since the swap I’ve been getting white smoke from the exhaust (Not much but its noticeable when the car is stopped) It kind of floats up through the engine bay when the cars sitting with the hood popped. When I first swapped the manifold it was coming from around the top of the manifold, I tightened the nuts some more (probably too much, didn’t use a torque wrench, just tightened it good) and now it comes from my down pipe (the mesh one, that’s where my exhaust ends, no cat, muffler, or pipes) I think I might need a head gasket but not sure. The oil dip stick kind of smells like gas, I haven’t smelt it before so I’m not sure if that’s what it’s usually like. The protégé is parked for now and I'd like to check everything while I can. I don’t have a FSM, I will get one. Where should I start in checking everything out? I kinda want to take everything appear and maybe pull the motor. How should I go about checking the motor and everything/head gasket? Any information will be appreciated. Thank you

    John,

White smoke from the exhaust means that you're burning coolant. You need to replace your headgasket

    You have an open header?

As far as checking the engine goes, I'd start with a compression test. That will give you an idea of the condition, and depending on the results, what you might want to do next. At the least, I'd have a valve job done while your headgasket is being replaced.

If I pull my dipstick and smell the oil on it, it also smells like gas. I believe that is because my valve guide seals are worn, and I burn oil.
