really high idle after IAC replacement

    this has gotten ridiculous.
i had problems with the idle before even swapping it out.
the usual: at a stop, the idle would bog down a bit, bouncing and stuff. with a/c on? yup, even worse. it wouldn't stall out....until as of late.

then came the removal and replacement. i checked the one i got from the salvage yard for correct resistance...it was alright.

anyways, i do the swap, then put everything back together. start her up.....the rpm's are at 2750 rpms....and showed no signs of wanting to come back down.....aaaaarrrggh! to make matters worse, it started rising and falling, rising and falling. freakin aggravating. i try to fix one problem, and now i have another.

I thought maybe it was just a bad replacement IAC, so i cleaned the original(yeah it was dirty) then put that one back on. i was hoping i'd at least get the original problem with the idle since it wasn't as much of a PITA.

......and what do ya know? same high ass RPM problem. it's somewhat driveable, but it's just really freakin loud since it refuses to go below 2500 rpms while in neutral. i checked thru the manual and one possible reason i found was the TPS being broken or loose. I just don't see what could've made the TPS go ape**** on me after switching out the IAC. All i did to that part was unplug it, then plug it back in.

i checked continuity with the specified feeler gauge inserted, and it went to zero. i checked it while fully opening the throttle plate, and it didn't show continuity until approaching WOT, as specified in the book.

does a fuse need to be unplugged to allow the ecu to reset the idle control?
i fixed a problem like this with a friend's acura legend, but i guess that's a bit different. Besides, i've already tried unplugging various fuses, then puttin em back in and nothing's fixing it. I really need to find out what the hell's wrong with it. If it's the TPS, then i'll just go get another from the salvage yard. there's plenty there. i'm sure i'll be using up a lot of gas going to work this week thanks to the stupid ass idle.

i tried searching the forums and couldn't find the same symptoms....

you probably have a very large air leak past the TB

Also check if your coolant temp plug is off... It could contribute to high idle as the ecu thinks the engine is cold and raises the idle... (warmup cycle)

the coolant temp sensor is the 3 pronged plug that's near the TB to the left surrounded by some hoses right?
think that's the one that i replaced awhile back. i'll check it out. thanks

could a large air leak develop that easily after just removing and reinstalling the TB and IAC?

did you clean off all the old gasket material and use a new throttle body gasket?

throttle body gasket, i sure didn't.
i cleaned the throttle body and what not, but definitely didn't scrape off the old gasket material.
i noticed that the surface was a bit darker where the TB attached to the intake manifold. Hmm...guess that's what it was. ****. I'll start with that then. what kind of material is the gasket anyway? i bought some gasket material from an Ace hardware before. Maybe i can cut that to size, and use it? what do you guys think?

the gasket is a paper type material. you could TRY to cut it yourself, but you'll need an exacto knife and some patience, to get the IAC port to line up. personally i would (and did) just buy the pre-cut gasket

well seeing how i already have that stuff, i could attempt to do that first, then see about buying a precut gasket. money's gotten tight, but if needed i'll buy one.

                      FUUUUUUUUUUCCKKK!!!
i'm waiting for my throttle body gasket and IAC valve o-ring to come in.
Meanwhile, my car has progressed up to 3500 rpms!!! this is pissin me off to the highest level of pistivity! The car can drive itself in 1st gear. All i have to do is shift into first, then let off the pedal. Auto ****in pilot! aaaaaarrrrgghh!
It still likes to occasionally rev up and down at a stop whenever it's not holding at 3500.
When i first checked out the continuity of the TPS, i was a little skeptical about it being correct. I wanna check it again, and make sure. damn dealership said they wouldn't have the friggin parts til probably monday! i couldn't order it any sooner than payday(thursday) so now i have to deal with this for the asswhooooole weekend. crap!

this is some interesting **** right here.
i had to call into work when my car decided to try to rev to infinity and beyond, forcing me to ride my brakes and downshift to attempt to slow it down. wwhhooooooaaa nelly!
went and picked up the TB gasket and IAC valve o-ring(<---this wasn't even the right one. assholes!) and when i removed the TB.....the plate was positioned at almost a 45 degree angle! i checked the movement of it, and surprise! there's a damn allen head screw with no locking nuts or anything, that moved itself backward, and stuck the throttle plate open. the more i stepped on the pedal, the more it had room to screw itself farther back to prop the plate open more. took pics on my phone, and will post em in a little bit.

it worked out alright though, bcuz i got a call from another employer i applied with, and interviewed with them yesterday.

things happen for a reason, and this was one of em. just wish that it wouldn't cause stress like this but hey, it comes with the territory right? riiiiiiight.
