    GTR swap (ftjandra)

I guess it's about time that I make a swap thread of my own now that it's almost running. A handful of you guys know how long it's been (years!) since I started collecting parts. It started out as a simple GTX motor swap from a group buy with Braden. When that fell through, I bought a GTR VJ-23 turbo, exhaust manifold, and GTR ecu from Japan through Dave and a GTR intake manifold from Malaysia. That's when it started getting out of hand, lol. Even after some Wiseco pistons and Carillo rods, I wasn't done. I sold the GTR ecu and got a Haltech E6X. I bought a head from a '00 Miata and had it worked with oversize valves and a port job. That required the intake manifold to be modified. Then came the diy downpipe/exhaust and custom brackets to keep the a/c and power steering. Add on to that a coil-on-plug setup with a custom mounting plate. Somewhere in between all that I installed a new head unit along with some nice speakers that required custom mounting plates and grilles. Not to forget, the custom made TTL bushings because there were no other alternatives at that time. Then, a custom radiator for the pwr water/air intercooler. Hmm, 'custom' seems to be the main word in this project. I am sure I am leaving out a bunch of stuff. The main reason it took so long was that I was a full-time student at GeorgiaTech. But, since graduating in January, I finally really got working on it. So after a few months, the end is finally near (I gotta get this thing done before I can get a job...).

I learned a lot of things during this 'adventure' and got to buy a lot of new tools, which is always nice. Welder, metal band saw, oscillosope, etc.

Now on to some select pics. There would have been too many to post, but you can see all of them here.

At this point it fires up and idles. Still have a few kinks to work out like the stock tach, etc. In the next few days I'll hopefully have some time to road tune it good enough to get to the dyno (gotta break-in the clutch first though).

If you can't differentiate between brake and break, you should go back to school

Yeah, I'll eventually either get the MSP LSD or a Quaife. I already have the Kia halfshaft. But, I am not looking forward to pulling the tranny...

Beautiful setup Ferdi! Let me know how it goes with the tach but I am pretty sure the 12 volt square wave will trigger it just fine. Most aftermarket tachs use the same type of trigger.

I'm also curious where you got the heat wrap for the silicone rad hoses. I am running one of those hoses between the block and exhaust manny and I'd like to wrap it up.

It's also amazing you have EGT probes for each cylinder. I guess you'll really know if an injector goes bad.

Are you running full sequential injection for all 4 cylinders?

Unfortunately, my tach still doesn't work (I am about to send you a PM). I bought the heat sleeve from Summit Racing; just search under 'thermo-sleeve'. But, since it is a sleeve, you'd have to disconnect your hose at one end to slip it over.

Well, I am a techie guy and like gadgets, lol; I have a sensor for like everything... And, yes, I am running full sequential injection, but wasted spark ignition (my Haltech only has a total of six injection/ignition outputs).

                nice build up

do you have a gearbox that can take its power output?
                LSD etc?

whats your goal for HP at the moment?

Jeeesh! Doesn't anyone just slap in a GTR all greasy and rusty like me?

Quaife LSDs are on sale at Quaife, I emailed them and they only had a few left. After shipping from England I think they are 2-3 hundred more than the MS one.

Oh, well that makes my decision about what one to use easier.
