well it all depends on the setup in the car, AFR, shape of the combustion chamber. Mitsubishi EVO has like a 8:1 compession ratio. I have a 9:1 in my car. I know Nissan's run 16-18 as well. RX-7's run around 16 at 25PSI. It all depends on the person's setup. All I am saying is my setup and every other Miata I've known with no alcohol will detonate at around 4000RPM if timing is more than 12deg advanced. Now you can change yours to 20. I am putting my 2cents. I don't believe anything until I see it and know about the setup.
If it's on the net, it doesn't mean it's true. I have seen too many "running" setups that just by looking at the setup, you know the car has never ran, b/c it would be impossible to run. I have tune cars since the 90's and this is not based on running one car on a DIY system.
My 2 cents.Omid

For sure. You should be able to run 16-17deg Advanced without an issue. I would not play with it as I said until you have your new engine in and on the dyno. Doing timing on street is pretty pointless.
One other thing is b/c you can run 20deg advanced, that doesn't mean that you will make more power. There is a point that you will start losing power with more advanced. Therefore you have to find that on the dyno and tune it there.Omid

finally got my stuff off the tuning laptop using my dads digital camera like a flash drive... lol
heres the screen shot of my timing map and a shot of one of my plugs after two back-to-back 0-100mph WOT runs. i know nothing about reading plugs, and my eyesight kinda sucks up close lol.
i was going to include the log from those WOT runs but it wont let me...sooo a screen shot of the 2nd one will suffice i guess. as you can see, my MAP under boost is very unstable.... it holds rock solid on my autometer boost gauge though .
oh yeah, 8.2:1 compression... gtr motor, gtr turbo, single msd coil on ms2Last edited by therieldeal; 07-27-2007, 12:36 AM.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

its not eaten away, its an Denso/HKS iridium plug with a fine-wire electrode. i thought the same thing when i first took them out of the motor (they were in it when i bought it).
map signal generally jumps up and down from 160-170 but sometimes dips as low as 150. seems to alternate high and low every other sample in the log.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

the pic of that plug is a bit out of focus by the way, the camera ONLY does autofocus so it ended up backfocused no matter what... hence the box RIGHT behind it to try to make it a little better.
i am going to try a filter i think. also the latest beta code for MS2 changed when the map signal is sampled... instead of every X number of milliseconds it now samples based on the tach signal, so it samples at the same point in the engine cycle every time. supposed to smooth things out INCREDIBLY, but i havent tried it yet.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Here's my plug pulled tonight. Notice the fine peppering on it which means I have slight detonation - it's very slight and aside from that the plug looks clean. The timing is off by 1 or 2 degrees of timing.
Jon, be careful running that much timing because as you can see I run less timing and I still be borderline.Last edited by Lex; 07-27-2007, 09:26 AM.
