GTX won't Start. Need some help

Hey guys. I'm new to this forum, but I've been here many a time looking around. I'm normally over at FEOA as I have a 91 escort GT. But I figured I might as well join this forum too as the escorts and proteges are basically the same car. But anyways...

I just finished swapping a JDM GTX motor into my escort. I went to start it up yesterday, but it wouldn't start. The motor would crank and it sounded like it wanted to start, but didn't. I pulled all the spark plugs to check em' and they were all normal except for number 4, which was dry black.(The plugs are brand new) This means it is getting too much fuel correct? I tested the spark plug wires to see if I was getting a spark, and I was getting good spark out of all 4 of them. I thought the fuel injector might be screwed up, so I took it out and put in an injector from my GT motor. The engine started but ran like crap, didn't sound right at all, and then died after about 3 seconds.

Any suggestions as to what the problem might be would be greatly apreciated. Thanks.

are you getting fuel?, spray some starting fluid in there and try it.
are you using a gtx harness? if your using a gtx harness there is a fuel pump resistor that don't ussally come on the harness, search for (fuel pump resistor on the forums)that and you will get your answer, if your using the gtx harness.

      Nice. Quick response...

I'm using the GT harness, and I'm pretty sure I'm getting fuel. PLug 4 was black so I was getting ALOT of fuel in that one.

regular GT injectors wont work, the GTX computer wont deliver enough fuel with those in there. put the GTX injectors back in and try it again... your fuel lines were probably dry from having the motor out.

try turning the key to on, and holding the flap of the VAF open by hand. this will let the fuel pump run for a few seconds to clear the air from the lines. now go try and start the car.

Okay, I'll try that out. I'm pretty sure I was getting fuel though, as the first time I cranked it, gas started to leak out of injector number 4, because the o ring was busted. Fixed that. Do you think injector number 4 could be stuck open or something, and all the fuel is just pooring through that one?

were the plugs wet? have you checked your ignition timing?

The plugs were dry. Number 1 2 and 3 looked brand new still, and number 4 was dry black. No, I haven't checked my timing, but the car sounded like the timing was way off. I'll definately check that out too. I just really want the car to run. I've been working on the thing for about a year now, but just don't have the time to work on it alot. So I was super pumped when it was finally ready to go a few nights ago, and now this. I sure hope I get it figured out

Plug wires in the correct order on the disty? I know a few people screwed that up at some point. I managed to mix them up doing one at a time years ago on a another car. Must be the polack in me!

if the plugs are not wet then you arent getting any fuel, for some reason. injectors could be clogged...

Yah, I'm in Canada though, and shipping will take a while back and forth. As well, in Canada, winter is coming, and I really want to drive the car some before the snow comes. Ah what a dilema. I'm pretty sure there's places in Winnipeg that can test/clean injectors. But thanks for the link, I'll keep them in mind if there's nothing in Winnipeg.

Haha, sweet! I got it working tonight. We pulled the fuel rail off and blew compressed air through it to clear out any junk, then we cleaned the injectors out with compressed air too, and put everything back together. Car started right up. Ran it for a bit, adjusted timing to 11 degrees, and then shut it down as I have very little coolant in it and no rad cap. I'm pumped I'll have to post some pics here when I get the chance to show what all I've done to the car.
