Cone Filters : Do they work on our cars and Spark gap

I know this an old-dead-boring topic but do cone filters work on mazda esp. 1.8i, and if so should there be a certain setup done to get max performance. i tried a cone on my car (im in sunny S.A, JHB) and I wasnt happy with it.

    Anybody share my views ?

also does any one know what the spark gap should be on the 1.8i motors

    Spark gap should be:

    NGK BKR5E-II: 1.0-1.1 mm
    Champion RC10YC4: 1.0-1.1 mm
    NGK BKR5E-11: 0.7-0.8 mm

    That's for 323 BJ.

PM me if you need: comprehensive Autodata information; Mazda's 2nd generation workshop manual; Mazda's Z5 overhaul workshop manual.

I only knew for NGK, for Champion I needed to check it out.

Otherwise, Autodata (EU) or for USA domestic Mitchell's On-Demand is great. It's a lot like a manual but you don't get things about the body, cosmetics and yes, no wiper nozzle adjustion tips, but you get main torques, every single specific detail about the engine, trouble code ID tips/tricks, A/C refrigerant, oil grades, octane ratings and so on. Imagine you have a workshop and you must be able to repair almost every car - do you want a single tool or bunch of tools (software based of course)?

Sure you can use Autodata too (it's smaller and easier with more illustrations) but then always keep in mind the OBD-II rule --- USA 1996; Europe 2001!

Everything in English, of course. PM me for more information.

I'm not a fan of sticking a cone filter in unless it's shielded from the hot air somehow. Otherwise, you're probably not making any extra power.

I've used Ractive shielded filters and they work fine, if you attach a suitable sized hose to it so it gets outside air, the better! and they sound louder than open cone filters.too!

SCC last issue (February) - and I DO mean last, they are going under - has a comparison of cold-air vs. ram-air intakes.
