    Sock's BP-Swappin' 323 Project Thread (Comments Appreciated!)

To start things off, here's a shot of the soon-to-be daily driver, the 1991 Mazda 323.

The body is SUPER CLEAN. It's from the Southern US, so there is virtually ZERO rust on the car. It's pretty bare inside (no p/s, manual windows, manual transmission, no tach, no sunroof) in the way of optional equipment.

The plan? Get an Escort GT donor car and insert all the fun bits to make for a reliably entertaining daily driver. The problem? The donor car was automatic. Oh well, that just means more work for me!

Bonus shot of the MR2 project/headache (self induced madness, of course. Why not go Megasquirt and EDIS while putting in that supercharged engine?).
I peered out from the castle window and looked over the splendor of ROTM county. Yes, twas' a much simpler time back then. Peasants would go about their postings, and I, the mod, would rule over them with an iron fist.

Getting to work on the interior. Although they aren't in the same class as the MX-3 seats, the Escort GT seats are a definite upgrade over the worn to hell 323 seats.

Young children cover your eyes. There'll be some serious stripping going on here.

    Out with the old.

    In with the new.

I think they'll look kickass with some new 205/50/15 rubber on them. Might need to sand blast and repaint the rims. Some corrosion action happening on them.

Might as well keep the suspension as spares/cores/reference pieces. It's getting crushed after anyways!

...and here's why! Expanding foam body repairs.

    You're next.

      Crappy automatic shifter garbage removed.

      ECU pulled out

No surprise here. 3 plugs for the damn auto ECU. So, out comes the whole engine harness.

Hate wiring messes? Keep your diagrams handy!

      Time to dig in.

Took a bite. Didn't like it. I began removing the accessories I'd be throwing out anyways. Some of the power steering lines and A/C lines were removed with a little extra malice.

      See ya later exhaust.

      Radiator and fan carefully removed.

A little more room to work now.

Almost all of the A/C garbage has been removed now.

Well, it's garbage now, at least.

Unplugged the body harness from the fuse panel. Other than two plugs under the dash, this was the only place I could find the engine and body harness connecting.

Oh Escort. Didn't know you were going to take your top off for me. You kinky lady.

Last time this car will see a BP. Pour one out for this dead homie.

AHHHH GOD. YOU'RE RIPPING MY HEART OUT! GIVE IT BACK!

I'm sorry. We did all we could. This is one permanently dead Escort now. Don't worry though, it'll get one big last steely hug from the car crusher before ending it's Escort life.

The parts pile grows ever larger.

        End of the night.

Overall, probably about 8 hours spent carefully removing the engine, wiring harness, fuel connectors (oh f*ck you Ford and that damn special rail plug. I even had the PROPER tool, and it still wouldn't release. I just used a screw driver to pop the clip out of the fuel filter end), and hoses.

The 323 will be easier since it doesn't have half the crap this Escort did (P/S, A/C, cruise control, automatic tranny and wiring).

The Escort GT front bumper will bolt right onto your 323, just an idea since they're the same colour n all.

Also Escort GT spring (if OEM) are stiffer than your 323s.

The exhaust will bolt up, just the tip will be to long.

Backseats should bolt right in too.

Also if you're doing the rear brake swap, don't forget the brake lines and prop valve thats agains't the firewall, snag the master cylinder too. Unless it has ABS, then ignore everything i've said

Lookin good tho! If you need any help i'll be happy to come by on a weekend if you pitch me gas money! I'm only an hour away.

I'm going to get an aftermarket set (thinking just Eibach for the smallest amount of drop) on my ZX2 S/R struts. I'll run OEM ZX2 mounts since I don't want my teeth jarred out with camber plates.

                Going custom on that one.

I was looking at those, but I can't seem to get the lower half of the rear seats out of the Escort.

It looked ABS free, so that was hopefully in the works. I wasn't sure if the masters were different, so that's good to know.

Well, that certainly might be an option if I can't get this pig running. I was hoping on showing up to a meet in my freshly converted 323 for ultimate cool-ness factor.

"Hey, there's a newbie who didn't screw it up!"

One question about the cluster > Will the Ford cluster swap in? I don't have a tach, but the Escort does...

Or, would I be further ahead to switch the temperature sending unit and get ahold of a Mazda tachometer display unit (cluster)?

I believe you will also need to source a speed sensor for the tranny from a Protege, the Ford ones are different. You will be fine without it hooked up for now but you just won't know your speed.

If you're using the Ford harness then the cluster will work fine, it bolts in the same way.

If I'm using the F-series from my B6, will the speed sensor even come into play? I think I might install the Mazda coolant sensor, tachometer 323 cluster, and Ford engine harness.

                    Makes sense, right?

to get the lower part of the seat out just look under the front edge of the seat there are white button things you push in and they will release the seat.
