    Making myself a flange.

Original vs. Planned (actually went with a slightly modified 45* bend for more awesomness)

    Blasting a hole.

    Original vs. 45* Downpipe

    Test fitting.

    Sizing up what I'll need.

    Welded some flanges on.

    Test fitting.

Made an overkill bracket to mount the cat.
I peered out from the castle window and looked over the splendor of ROTM county. Yes, twas' a much simpler time back then. Peasants would go about their postings, and I, the mod, would rule over them with an iron fist.

          Added the straight section.

          Added a hanger

This is the funky piece that goes over the rear suspension

Painted the front downpipe from manifold. High heat flat black.

The rest of the exhaust got high heat silver since I was too dirty/lazy to go buy another can of black. Looks fine anyways.

And a turn to go around the gas tank,

          And into the muffler.

After the muffler section gets painted black (to hide it even more), it should look fairly stealthy.

One thing about your hose running to the brake booster. You may know this, or maybe not, but the OEM hose (although it just looks like a hose with some steel tubing) has a check-valve in it. It looks like you just put a long piece of rubber hose in it's place. If so, you may see some trouble with your booster not working properly. How do I know this? My first rally car suffered from this problem, no check-valve, trying to stop after full throttle = very little braking power = very scarey high speed cornering in the dirt!!
Looking great, keep up the good work...

horray for the way welding galvanized steel looks!! lol
may want to sand or grind that coating off before welding in the future, i mean the welds work fine, its just a little harder to make um look nice

I will toss it back on there after fixing it (I bent the end of it when dropping in the new motor ), so I'll just need to cut and re-flare (bubble out) the end to get a good clamp spot on it. Thanks for the heads up.

Also, I wasn't aiming for the welds to be pretty, just strong. I'm also a crappy welder and using a 220v arc makes for some learning on this thin exhaust tubing. lol

I still have to build one mount for the pipe that goes around the fuel tank, clamp on the muffler (incase I decide to switch in the future, easier to change out) and then weld on the tip/exhaust pipe piece.

Then, I need to build myself an intake system and get on with this thing!

Actually, the check-valve is in the rubber hose section. I fixed my rally car by using a plastic check-valve out of a Honda Prelude. Pretty much any check-valve that goes inline to a brake booster should work though. Some cars have them in the booster itself. And at a glance, Mazdas seem to be that way. Even without it, you may never have a problem. I mostly noticed it when I started left foot braking. (rally driving technique for rotating a fwd car faster around a corner, on the gas and brakes at the same time)
Arc welding is tough and rarely good looking. The mig welder is my favorite tool in the shop!! :-)

There's no cancer there, just crappy surface rust on the rear suspension.

Didn't I happen to mention that I have that whole Escort GT rear subframe just hanging about (going to clean it, paint it, install that).

                            Getting started.

Oh? What's that? A chunk of my paycheque today, that's what.

                            Button up the hoses.

                            Getting the front end re-installed.

I think these might have a new home when not installed on the MR2...

its comin along! FYI you can cut your headlight/corner lower lip to fit in there so there isn't a huge gap.

                                love the rims tho!
