1991 Mazda 323 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) question

I have the little "turtle car" and it has a dead speedometer, and it automatic transmission is stuck in 2nd (reverse ok, 1st manually selectable). I'm guessing VSS not connected. Where is this located? On top of trans? Underneath battery tray? Thank you.

yeap, right on top of the trans with the speedo gear. hard to get to, but if the speedo is dead, I'll bet you're right.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

That would explain why it didn't work when I tried to install it

the tom cruise module needs to see a pulse signal or else it won't be able to hear the voice of Xenu and know what speed to hold.

            All Hail lord Xenu!

You should be able to get a VSS pulse signal out of your gauge cluster too. I forget which pins it is...but there is a diagnostic test for seeing if the cluster VSS is within spec. It's in the Chassis Electrical section of the Mazda FSM.
