In fact, if you're planning to buy one new, I would suggest getting an Mfactory LSD instead. It's probably about the same price (if not cheaper) and a hell of a lot stronger.

You can use your clutch with the Kia trans. Not sure why it wouldn't work with the protege trans. I used my escort GT clutchmasters stage 3 with a protege trans before.
Thankx for the good info. I had went to a junkyard grabbed a tranny from a protege bp nd tried it but the transmition shaft was slightly smaller.

The Kia transmission's input shaft diameter is 15/16" with a spline count of 22. So as long as your clutch disc's hub diameter and spline count arethe same, it will work. I'll be using a Miata flywheel and clutch in my swap. I've also got an MFactory LSD. The Kia transmission has a 28 pline diff, not 26. Make sure to get the right LSD otherwise you'll also need to get different axles. The diff, along with new diff bearings, cost less than $800 shipped.

What year was the BP powered Protege? Since we're in Canada, the only true BP/G-series trans Proteges are the 90/91/93 Protege GT, and the 95 Protege BP only. 96+ is f-series, long with the 1.8/1.6 sohc engines.

I know this is an older thread, but it seems like the best place to ask: What are the final drive options for the Kia trans? Mine seems to have a 4:56 or 4:11 final drive and I'm running close to 3000 rpm at 60. I'd like to get than down to around to 2000 rpm or so (and keep my current tire size)

.717 5the gear will help a little but I think a 3.85 Escort FD will work, but don't quote me on that.

Rivet the lowest highway RPM you can get with this series of trans would involve buying a 2.0 SOHC escort transmission (97+) and swapping the entire guts into your kia trans. They have the .717 5th and the 3.85 final drive. You could mix and match 3rd and 4th gear depending on what you're trying to accomplish, if i remember right 1st and 2nd are always the same ratio.

Back before i went toyota i did this exact swap on my 95 eGT. I used a kia case, a 28 spline quaife diff, and kia axles.

These days you could do the same thing with a 26 spline MFactory diff and it would allow you to keep your stock 26 spline axles.

If you arent running an LSD just keep the stock Escort diff with the 3.85 ring gear attached. The kia open diff isnt any better or worse than the escort one.

The best you will get is the .717 fifth gear. I have the .717 sets for the g series and they will also fit the g series K24 KIA tranny. You will not get to that 2k rpm ever on these transmissions. With you running at 3k at 60 it looks you might already have the .717 set in your transmission.

Wait even with the festiva 5th gear swap? curious if those could work on the KIA g series.

I have the .717 gears in my Kia trans and it's nowhere near 2000rpm on the highway. More like 3500, I think.

Edit: 2000 rpm for me is 45 mph
