Help Me Build A Race Machine!

I have a 2000 Protege LX, 1.8L, standard, fully loaded. I have about $6000 worth in parts for it already sitting in my basement, waiting to be installed. Most of them are aesthetic, like body kit, headlight assembly etc. It was easy to buy all the dress-up stuff, 'cause I know what looks good, but as far as performance goes, I'm somewhat of a noob

Here are some of the performance parts I've purchased already, but haven't installed. Feel free to comment or criticize my choices:

    - Injen Cold Air Intake
    - OBX Racing Headers
    - Denso IK20 Iridium Spark Plugs
    - Six Core Spark Plug Wires
    - Voltage Stabilizer / Ground Wire Kit
    - Enkei 18" RZ-5 Rims (I know 18's suck for performance, but I can swap them for 15" or 16" wheels when I wanna take 'er out to race)
    - Falken Ziex ZE-912 (215/35/R18) Tires (installed on the Enkei rims)
    - Tokico HPK247 Suspension Kit (with springs - 1.4" front drop, 1.75" rear drop)

Pretty basic stuff, right? Here's what I'm looking to upgrade, and I would appreciate any feedback I can get. Keep in mind that I'm not planning to make this a smooth ride... I intend to give some heavy tuners and muscle cars a run for their money, mostly at the drag strip. Here's what I wanna upgrade or install, but I need help in choosing the best products and combinations to turn the stock vehicle into a racing monster:

    - Drivetrain (clutch, pressure plate, flywheel etc.)
    - Engine (pistons, rods, cams, injectors etc.)
    - Turbo Kit
    - Exhaust (piping, muffler)
    - Brakes (rear disc conversion, possibly big brake kit, brake lines, calipers etc.)
    - Stabilizer / Sway Bars
    - Anything else you might recommend

What do I have to keep in mind when choosing these items? My biggest fear is having all these high performance parts, but something failing or blowing because it can't handle the stress. I'm not afraid to spend a pretty penny, but I'd like to keep it reasonably priced.

Any and all suggestions are much appreciated

P.S. I'd like to keep the 1.8L engine if I can. I just wanna do as much to it as possible.

I'm having a particularly tough time deciding on the type of performance clutch to get.

Well, I'm not that concerned about the brand of the clutch. But what should I be looking for with regards to most torque and responsiveness?

          - Sprung or unsprung?
          - Full-face, 4 pad/puck, or 6 pad/puck?
          - Organic, kevlar, carbon/ceramic, or iron?

I would be careful with the SPEC clutch kits, they really havent put the R&D into the protege line or the compact Mazdas in general. I knows some people that knows some people, plus the company is just up the road.

You will want sprung if you DD it sometimes.

If you are looking for a decent bump in power you should look into swapping in the JDM V6 and then twin turbo that. The 1.8L 3rd Gen motor just doesn't have much aftermarket support. The FS 2.0L would be a good swap as well, but you have to really upgrade the internals to make any power.

dam i hate to say it. but the srt4 dos make good power.
but if you are a true mazda fan stay with what you got. the 1.8 bp will
make good power with good internals. i also am building a drag car. i am building for about 600whp out of a bp. will be posting a thread about it soon.check out the custom rod and piston setup at www.cpboost.com ask about it.

so your answer is to get a fwd dodge or a dsm? There is a guy i work with that has an evo, and ive been doing the math... yes its a heavier car, a nice stereo, pretty wheels, big brembo brakes, leather interior... but my escort on half the boost could keep up with one down the 1320 (with slicks) and the ONLY reason i couldnt without would be my 2.4 60' time compaired to their 1.7 60' time. same size motor, smaller turbo (on me). not to mention he is damn near paying a mortgage payment between insurance and the car payment and my escort was paid in full and MINE.

I know your not telling him to go out and get an evo a 2 gen eclipse is cheaper, but your still between the evo and the eclipse looking at a 10-18k purchase for a decent unmolested car.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

Theres a nice 4wd boosted 1st gen for sale in the cars for sale section. Sell yours and buy that. Kill those evos and dsms lol.

what the hell eclipse are you paying over 10k for? Hell the nicely moded clean ones go for 12k.The group car( bone stock turbo awd) cost $7k and all it need was cv joints all the way round. I wouldn't buy a used evo if they were giving the damn thing away either. People do stupid things to them. Lets put bigger wheels in the rear!
